For developers building applications with open source dynamic languages, the cloud is a key development area, and not just for network administrators looking for scale.

In terms of language usage, it is found that nearly 80 percent of developers are using Javascript, while both Python and Perl came in at 47 percent, PHP at 42 percent and Ruby at 31 percent

According to the director of engineering at ActiveState, Jeff Hobbs, this confirms a lot of basic hunches that dynamic languages are just increasing their usage in standard programming applications and especially in newer development such as the cloud application space.

While many developers are headed to the cloud, however it is being noted that nearly 43 percent of respondents had no plans yet for cloud development in the next 24 months.

Hobbs said, “You think about the development cycle that a large enterprises has- they can go anywhere from one year to three to five-year cycles”. For the people who have just released applications, it might still be three to five years before they can assess the value of the advantages that might be presented in the cloud.

For developers, there are a number of differences between developing for the cloud versus traditional deployment methods. Some of the differences depend on the type of cloud deployment being used.

According to principal analyst and partner at Redmonk, Stephen O’Grady, the differences with Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings are typically things such as the APIs used to access the storage layer. “For Platform-as-a-Service offerings that tend to be far more prescriptive, the differences can be relatively extensive, from a difference in the typical infrastructure software (e.g. databases) to the implementation of the development framework.”

Hobbs noted that since the cloud virtualizes multiple elements of an application deployment stack, including the server, it makes the actual languages used stand out more than they have in the past. He added that he has seen some subtle shifts in dynamic languages that make the languages more cloud-friendly.

According to Hobbs, it’s really important that the language developers’ use already has the library and frameworks already provided and supported. The dynamic languages become an advantage to cloud app development as you’re ready to use all the pieces that you need to use and they’re abstracted in the right way.”

Challenges to Cloud Development

The dynamic programming aspects of dynamic languages allow for fast development times as well. However, there are number of challenges that still face dynamic language developers.

Hobbs noted that having the required tooling for deployment is critical. He added that concerns around security are also a barrier- one that 40 percent of poll respondents identified as an issue.

According to Redmonk’s O’Grady, the dynamic languages themselves can evolve to take better advantages of the cloud, though the cloud vendors can help out there, too.

While there are changes to the language runtimes that could improve their ease of use in the cloud, it’s more likely that changes will come at the framework layer. And it’s likely that cloud offerings, moving forward, will increasingly support event-based frameworks to better take advantage of the concurrency that the cloud offers.”

On Friday, Squeak developers released version 4.1 of the Smalltalk open source programming language, and just before six weeks Squeak 4.0 was pushed out.

According to the release announcement, this version combines the licence change occurring in the 4.0 release with the development work that has been going on while the re-licensing process took place.

The latest version includes integration of Cog’s closure implementation, improved user interface look and feel, new anti-aliased fonts, core library improvements and advances in modularity.

According to the Weekly Squeak, one key focus for this release was to address the issues that have been known to frustrate developers using Squeak for the first time.

A much improved set of UI widgets, the new menu bar including the fast search control, integrated help, improved test coverage, more class and method comments, and integrated syntax highlighting all make the system more accessible.

Database computing- major presence of Oracle, Oracle is an RDBMS (Relational Database Management System), developed and marketed by Oracle Corporation. It stores all your valuable data in the DBF file. The DBF file contains all Oracle database objects, such as tables, reports, forms, macros, views, constraints, triggers, stored procedures, and more.

If any of these database objects or the entire database gets damaged, you can not access your valuable data from it. In such circumstances, Oracle Database Recovery software is required to extract data from the database.

In order to overcome DBF corruption, Oracle offers a number of methods to detect and repair data files. These options include:

DBVerify- It is an external command-line utility, which enables you to validate offline data files of Oracle database. In addition to the offline data files, you can also use this utility for checking validity of the backup data files.

ANALYZE … VALIDATE STRUCTURE- It is used to verify every single data block in the analyzed object. If this tool finds any corruption, rows are added to INVALID_ROWS table.

DB_BLOCK_CHECKING- If DB_BLOCK_CHECKING argument is set as TRUE, Oracle carries out a walk-through of the data in database block for checking whether it’s self-consistent or not. This block checking process may add 1 to 10% overhead to server. This setting is recommended only if you can accept the overhead.

DBMS_REPAIR- It enables you to find and fix database corruption. This process needs two administration Oracle database tables for holding the list of damaged blocks and the index keys which point to those damaged blocks.

Facebook API is very powerful and it allows you to create your own Facebook applications, which you, your friends or everyone else can then consume. You can use the Facebook applications you build on profile pages, canvas pages, and so on. You can even make money by developing practical applications. So, let’s get started with creating your own Facebook application.

What You Need-

To create your own Facebook application, you should know how to program in one of the supported languages, such as PHP, Ruby on Rails, or Python. With that knowledge, all you need to do to get started is:
1. Add Facebook Developer Application to your Facebook account.
Go to the Facebook Developers page and click “Add developer.” This is the central location for all your applications on Facebook. You can request as many as 100 API keys from the applications page, as well as manage and change the settings for all your applications. Now that you have added Facebook Developer Application to your account, let’s move on to adding your very first application.

2. Add your first Facebook application.
Go back to the Facebook Developers page and click the Set Up New Application button. This will take you to the “Create Application” page, where you are required to provide the name of your application and, as a rule, agree to certain terms and conditions.
After saving changes to this page, you will be taken to your application’s homepage, which serves as your application’s edit page. You can change all the settings related to your application here, such as its name, description, icon, logo and much more. You can add more developers if you are going to develop the application in a team.
On the same page, Facebook provides you with an API Key and a Secret Key, which are the passports for your application to interact with

Facebook core applications and the outside world. Do not share you secret key with anyone.

Pre-development Changes

To start developing your application, you need to make important changes to the following settings:

API Key – This unique key helps Facebook identify whatever request(s) you make. Enclose this API key along with all your requests.

Secret Key – As mentioned previously, you should keep this key safe and share it with no one, because it is responsible for authenticating your request.

Now, click on the Authentication tab, where you need to specify:

Post-Authorize Callback URL – When a user authorizes your application and adds it to a Facebook account, then Facebook pings this URL. So, this URL needs to be your site’s URL where you application is hosted. This cannot be a URL from Facebook.

Post-Authorize Remove URL – When your application is removed by a user, this URL will be pinged along with a post request, which will contain the User_id. This process allows you to log which user has removed your application.

Now click on the canvas tab, where you need to specify:

Canvas Page URL – Choose a canvas page URL for Facebook, such as http://apps.facebook.com/your-app-name.

Canvas Callback URL – This is the muscle of your application. Facebook pulls the content from this URL and displays it on the application’s canvas page. The URL can be where you have your application hosted.

Render Method – You need to selected this option according to your code. If your code is going to have FBML tags, then you should select “FBML” in this option. Otherwise, leave it default as “iframe” (for this example, you can choose either).

These settings should be enough to get you started with your first Facebook application. Undoubtedly, you can make many other changes to suit your needs in due course.

Now that you have set up the application, let’s have a look-see at how to put some muscle on your bare-bones application. In this example, you need to use Facebook’s PHP client library, which is a compressed file. After downloading the client library, extract the files. You will get two folders namely, footprints and php.

Footprints is a sample application provided to help you understand how the Facebook API works. However, because the API functions keep changing, this code might have some deprecated functions. The php folder contains the library files that you will use to talk back to the Facebook API.

Create a file called index.php and copy the following code into it:

<?php

require_once 'php/facebook.php';

$appapikey = 'INPUT YOUR APP KEY HERE';

$appsecret = 'INPUT YOUR APP SECRET KEY HERE';

//create the object

$facebook = new Facebook($appapikey, $appsecret);

/**

*/

if(!is_numeric($facebook->get_loggedin_user()) || !$facebook->api_client->users_hasAppPermission("publish_stream"))

 $facebook->require_login($required_permissions = 'publish_stream');

/**

Important Tasks to Remember

Make sure you complete the following tasks to properly build your application:

Include the library file (facebook.php) and change the path in require_once to match your folder hierarchy.

Copy/paste the API key and secret key before trying to use your application. It won’t work without these anyhow.

Input the canvas page URL right to the path of the script on your server/domain.

When you execute the above script, it will look for logged in users, if any. If a user is not logged in, then it redirects the user to the Facebook login page. This is also handled by the require_login function, but the problem with require_login is that it redirects so often that any post data to your page is lost. So, you have put a check before calling the require_login function. In the same line, you also check whether or not your application has permission to post updates onto a user’s stream. If you do not have permission, the user is prompted to allow your application.

When you have permissions and post data, the status is updated to the user. When a status is successfully posted, a response of the typeuserid_postid is returned. If it fails, then different error codes are returned. Find a list of error codes on Facebook’s wiki page.

You can extend the above code to suit your requirements. If you feel confident, you can move on to write some advanced programs using FBJS and XFBML. Other than that, you should keep abreast of any functions that Facebook deprecates — particularly those that your code might be using. Otherwise, your application might crash all of a sudden.

This week, Perl is getting an update that will advance the open source development language with new capabilities. With Perl 5.12, support is being added for pluggable keywords, which could help to improve Perl developer efficiency.

According to a senior developer at ActiveState, the pluggable keyword mechanism hooks directly into the parser, so the mechanism allows the implementation of that keyword to define the syntax of the rest of the statement.

The new Perl 5.12 release comes at an interesting juncture for the Perl community as new user growth may be slowing down while development continues on Perl 6.

Since 1987, the Perl dynamic language has been around and Perl 5.0 appeared in 1994. Longevity is hallmark of Perl development, a feature that’s reinforced with a fix in Perl 5.12. Perl 5.12 includes a fix for a the year 2038 Unix flaw, which restricted Perl to show dates only up to the year 2038, at which point it would reset the calendar back to 1970.

Perl 6

The new Perl 5.12 release advances the Perl 5 platform, and the developers have been working on Perl 6 since 2004, and might will stretch out for years to come. According to Dubois, some people are tired of waiting for Perl 6, so the Perl 5 development effort is picking up again, hence the release of Perl 5.12.

There are currently a number of implementation efforts for Perl 6 underway, with Rakudo probably being the most prominent and advanced, Dubois said. In his opinion, it will still be many years before Perl 6 Rakudo could become a serious alternative to Perl 5 for most users.

Dubois said, it is hard to predict if this is ever going to happen or not. But Perl 5 users won’t have to wait for Perl 6 to get updated, as there is a plan in place for a new Perl 5 version next year.

With some more new features, the Perl 5.14 should be released in about one year.

Long popular with bloggers, the open-source
WordPress blogging software is also starting to find a niche as a low-cost corporate CMS (content management system), at least for managing relatively simple Web sites.

“In the last six months or so, over half the sites being launched with WordPress are really not blogging sites per se, they are complete sites,” said Raanan Bar-Cohen, vice president of media services for Automattic, the company WordPress developer Matt Mullenweg started to offer a hosted version of the software.

Such use has caught at least some of the CMS community by surprise.

“There’s a debate raging within Twitter about whether traditional blogging platform WordPress is also a CMS,” wrote Tony Byrne in a blog post. Byrne is the founder of the CMS analyst firm The Real Story Group, formerly called CMS Watch. “Our take: many organizations are using WordPress as a CMS. That makes it a CMS.”

“A larger enterprise would almost never want [to] use one of those tools for a major web property. But they offer useful alternatives for [small and medium-size business] scenarios, as well as simpler projects,” Byrne elaborated.

WordPress, created in 2003, uses a variety of open-source programs and open standards, such as PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

Byrne admitted he was skeptical at first of the idea of using WordPress as a CMS. Out of the box, it doesn’t have many of the capabilities, such as workflow or advanced version control, needed even for basic CMS duties.

“It’s one thing to run a blog with a few extra plug-ins and widgets. It’s another to run a corporate Web site,” Byrne said in an interview.

Nonetheless, The Real Story Group spoke with customers and examined Web sites. It found that if an organization had to maintain a relatively simple Web site, one with 50 pages or fewer, then WordPress could prove to be a low-cost, relatively easy-to-maintain option.

“It’s not a [full] development platform, but it can drive a simple Web site fairly capably,” Byrne said.

While it is less sophisticated than many CMS packages, such as the open-source Drupal, it could provide an alternative to other simple platforms, like Joomla and the .Net-driven DotNetNuke.

In this realm, WordPress offers a few distinct advantages, most notably its intuitive interface. “WordPress has an ease of use that is something other vendors could learn from,” Byrne said.

Also, thanks to third-party developers, WordPress has a wide array of plug-ins to extend its functionality, some of which can be used to tackle CMS chores. For instance, a plug-in called
Edit Flow offers workflow, or the ability to route a document to multiple parties for editing and approval.

Overall, the WordPress site itself lists more than 8,600 plug-ins.

WordPress has its downsides as well. For one, access control is quite limited, Byrne said. The software offers only sitewide roles. Anybody with administrative rights has the ability to edit any page on the entire site. Someone from human resources, for instance, wouldn’t be restricted to editing only HR pages.

Another shortcoming is the lack of advanced content modeling. While a site can host a series of Web pages, it would be difficult to make finer distinctions among the pages — for a news site to separate news articles from case studies and features, for instance.

Making such distinctions would be possible through some development work, though other CMSes can make this sort of templating much easier.

In general, the deeper into development that a Web site administrator must go, the more the organization should consider another platform, Byrne said.

http://www.all1social.com

Seed7 is a general purpose programming language, which is designed by Thomas Mertes. The Seed7 interpreter and the example programs are open-source software. There is also an open-source Seed7 compiler. The compiler compiles Seed7 programs to C programs which are subsequently compiled to machine code. Functions with type results and type parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept.

And object orientation is used where it brings advantages and not in places where other solutions are more obvious.

Key Features of Seed7:-

• User defined statements and operators.
• Types are first class objects (Templates and generics can be defined easily without special syntax).
• Predefined constructs like arrays or for-loops are declared in the language itself.
• Object orientation with interfaces and multiple dispatch.
• Static type checking and no automatic casts.
• Support for bigInteger and big Rational numbers which have unlimited size.
• exception handling
• overloading of procedures/functions/operators/statements
• Various predefined types like resizable arrays, hashes, bitsets, structs, color, time, duration, etc.
• Runs under linux, various unix versions and windows.
• The interpreter and the example programs use the GPL license, while the runtime library uses the LGPL license.

Newly included features in this release:

• The functions in the gethttp.s7i library were improved to allow the specification of a port number as part of the location (e.g.: localhost:1080/index.html).
• The tarx.sd7 (tar archiving utility) example program was
renamed to tar7.sd7 .
• The codepage 8859_11 was added to the charsets.s7i library.
• The bas7.sd7 (basic interpreter) example program was improved.
• The toutf8.sd7 example program was improved to write an explanation and to support several IANA/MIME charset names.
• An explanation what to do, when the path of the bcc32 C compiler contains a space, was added to ’src/read_me.txt’.
• Documentation comments were added to the charsets.s7i library.

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a syntax used to describe the look and the feel of the elements in a web page. CSS allows a web developer to separate the document content – the HTML, text, and images – from the presentation of that content. Such separation makes the markup in a page easier to read, understand, and update; it can result in reduced bandwidth as the style information can be specified in a separate file and cached by the browser; and makes site-wide changes easier to apply.

Many style sheets include repeated styling information because CSS does not allow the use of variables. Such repetition makes the resulting style sheet lengthier and harder to read; it results in more rules that need to be changed when the website is redesigned to use a new primary color.

In order to specify the inherited CSS rules, such as indicating that the elements in h1 elements should not be underlined, requires creating a single selector name, like h1 a. Ideally, CSS would allow for nested rules, enabling you to define the rules directly within the h1 rules.

.LESS is a free, open-source port of Ruby’s LESS library. LESS (and .LESS, by extension) is a parser that allows web developers to create style sheets using new and improved language features, including variables, operations, mixins, and nested rules.

Behind the scenes, .LESS converts the enhanced CSS rules into standard CSS rules. This conversion can happen automatically and on-demand through the use of an HTTP Handler, or done manually as part of the build process. Moreover, .LESS can be configured to automatically minify the resulting CSS, saving bandwidth and making the end user’s experience a snappier one.

The openSUSE developers have released the second milestone of openSUSE 11.3. The update includes final versions of KDE 4.4, OpenOffice 3.2 and VirtualBox 3.1.4, but openSUSE 11.3 still has a number of bleeding edge releases including GNOME 2.30 beta 1 (2.29.90). The milestone is based on the 2.6.33 Linux kernel “with all its bug fixes and new hardware support”.

Other updated packages include DigiKam, evolution, Mono, GnuTLS and libgphoto2. Developers will also find Bootchart 2.0.0.9, a tool for analyzing slow system booting, included.

The previous milestone’s support for LXDE has now been incorporated into the installation process, allowing users to install openSUSE 11.3 with only the LXDE desktop.

The openSUSE developers plan to switch to GCC 4.5.0 in the next milestone to benefit from its better optimisation. According to a new timeline page, milestone 3 is due at the start of March, and a final release mid-July.

The openSUSE 11.3 milestone 2 is available to download now for testing purpose; known bugs are documented on the openSUSE wiki. The developers would like special attention paid to the GNOME accessibility stack as new features in it need extensive testing.

The “operating system for embedded smart objects“, Contiki, has been updated to version 2.4 with new experimental platforms and improved stability.

The BSD licensed operating system is designed to be small, highly portable and work in networked, but memory constrained systems, such as sensor network nodes. Typical configurations can use as little as 2KB of RAM and 40KB of ROM and Contiki has been ported to computers such as the Commodore 64 and microcontrollers such as the TI MSP430 and Atemel AVR.

The updated version of Contiki adds two new experimental platforms, the Crossbow MicaZ and the Sensinode CC2430/8051. A new sensor API has been incorporated and the wireless MAC protocols have been overhauled, improving power efficiency and the handling of collision and interference. Source code and binaries are available to download.

Amarok Project developers have released the first beta for what will become version 2.3 of their popular open source music player for the KDE desktop, code named “Altered State”.

Developers decided to release the next version of Amarok as version 2.3 instead of 2.2.3 because of the “considerable visual changes in the main toolbar, and many other improvements”, according to the project developers.

Amarok 2.3 Beta 1 features a completely redesigned main toolbar that includes several new features, next and previous track selection using the horizontal mouse wheel button, and the ability to group Podcasts and Saved Playlists by provider, such as iPod, Local or USB Mass Storage.

Other changes include updates to the moving/copying operations, the equalizer configuration and a number of bug fixes. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. The developers ask users testing the release to report any bugs that they encounter.

Amarok 2.3 Beta 1 is available to download from the project’s website. Amarok is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).

OpenOffice’s latest version fixes several vulnerabilities that could cause a computer to become compromised by a remote attacker.

OpenOffice.org has issued version 3.2, which adds a lengthy list of new features and improves the suite’s overall performance while also fixing six vulnerabilities.

Three of those problems could allow a remote attacker to execute code. In one of those cases, a malicious XPM file — a type of image format supported by ODF (Open Document Format) — could be maliciously crafted and allow remote user to execute other code on the computer with the same privileges as the local user.

The suite had a similar vulnerability involving the GIF image format, which has also been fixed.

The third vulnerability could allow an attacker to take over a PC by getting a user to open a maliciously crafted Microsoft Word document. All three of those vulnerabilities affect all versions of OpenOffice.org prior to version 3.2.

Increasingly, Hackers look for these three kinds of vulnerabilities, since users can be targeted by e-mail, and various social engineering tricks can be employed to try to get them to open a document.

The latest version can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org.

fork() is a concept that originated in the UNIX world. Running programs are called processes, and the only way to execute a new program is for a current program to fork() itself, thereby creating a seperate process. The process that called fork() is known as the parent process, and the newly created process is known as the child process.

The child process, which begins its life as a copy of the parent process, can be “replaced”.
In UNIX, the first program that is executed after booting finishes is the init process. This process will fork() and load the getty program over the child process, thereby creating a process which will prompt the user for a password.

Since a call to fork() creates a child process which is in essence the same as the parent process, it is necesarry to determine (from within the process) which process is the child, and which is the parent.

Upon succesfull execution, the fork() call returns the child’s Process ID in the parent process, and a 0 in the child process.

You can then use the child to execute a system call, such as running another program (or whatever you needed a second process for).

If you are using pipes (for communication between the child and parent process), make sure you have the parent wait for it.

The Symbian Foundation announced the first fully open-source release of their popular smartphone OS today, the new Symbian 3.

Symbian is the world’s most popular smartphone OS, which is used on phones including the Nokia E72. You will extremely found it common in Europe and Asia, typically AT&T carries one Symbian phone at a time (right now the Nokia E71x and Nokia sells some unlocked phones to individual consumers.

Last week, Symbian announced that the company had made its existing Symbian OS platform open-source and promised that Symbian devices would come to US carriers in 2010.

Symbian’s improvements

The new Symbian 3 works hard to integrate touch-screen support into the OS, something that has seemed awkward on some previous Symbian devices like the Nokia 5800.

The new OS moves to a “single-tap paradigm,” reducing the number of times you have to tap the screen, and implements multi-touch gestures such as flick-to-scroll and pinch-to-zoom. The new OS release also livens up the phone’s home screen with support for multiple pages of widgets and a widget manager.

Symbian 3 supports 2D and 3D graphics acceleration and HDMI video output. And unlike Apple’s iPhone OS, Symbian 3 embraces multitasking third-party applications. The new OS improves low-level memory management by using writeable data paging, which lets apps running in the background, swap their data out to persistent flash storage, and free up RAM when they’re not busy.

According to chairman of Symbian’s Features & Roadmap Council, Ian Hutton, it means more of the data that was stored in RAM can be paged out, giving you more apps running in parallel.

Symbian 3 also takes care of some old Symbian problems. For instance, many Symbian phones and applications tend to get confused about which Internet access method to use if they have several options. “One-click connectivity” in Symbian 3 fixes that. Hutton said, it bashes a load of those dialogs [away] and just essentially does the right thing.

Symbian vs. Google

Symbian 3 will go up against Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile in a bid to attract third-party manufacturers. Both Android and Symbian are at least somewhat open-source, and both OSes rely on an alliance of partners to build phones – the Symbian Foundation and Google’s Open Handset Alliance. But Symbian sees its strength in the fact that the company isn’t shepherded by a single, for-profit corporation.

Symbian also approves of a broader array of development tools than Google does. While Google generally tries to get Android developers to focus on writing for the Dalvik Java engine, Symbian developers can write native code in C and C++ or choose to write in Nokia’s QT framework or Web standards like JavaScript and CSS, according to Hutton.

By the end of the year, Symbian 3 could appear in phones, said Larry Berkin, Symbian’s head of global alliances. And this week, a demo of Symbian 3 will get at Mobile World Congress this week.

Verizon Wireless will allow the customers to use the Internet phone service Skype to make free calls on some phones, an application that wireless carriers have been slow to allow.

Under a deal announced Tuesday at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow, users of some Verizon phones who have a voice and data plan will be able to download a free Skype application in late March. That will let them call or instant-message other Skype users for free or call regular phone numbers outside the United States for a fee paid to Skype. These calls would go over Verizon’s network and would not use up minutes on a cell phone plan.

However, Minutes would be deducted to use Skype to cal regular phone numbers in the US, according to Verizon.

Initially, the mobile application will be available for nine Verizon phones, including several BlackBerry models and Motorola Inc.’s Droid and upcoming Devour handsets.

According to Verizon’s chief marketing officer John Stratton, the application will be able to run all the time in the background. This means other people should be able to contact you through Skype even if your phone is on standby.

Other wireless carriers have blocked the Skype app from running all the time. It’s available on the iPhone only in Wi-Fi hot spots. In October, AT&T said it would relent and let the program work over its cellular network as well, but Skype has not yet released an application to enable that. Verizon’s version of Skype mobile will not work over Wi-Fi, the companies said.

Skype CEO Josh Silverman in an interview said, working directly with Verizon let Skype do things it couldn’t, such as integrating its service with a phone so Skype is built into the address book.

Originally, wireless carriers feared giving customers a way to avoid using voice minutes in their cell phone plans.

Now the companies are recognizing the value of customers who pay extra for data service. When the carriers “see how popular Skype is with American consumers they realize by offering Skype they can attract more customers,” according to Silverman.

Today we received a tip from Apple, telling us that a San Francisco-based mobile app tracking analyst group called Flurry had been charting dvelopments for the Android and iPhone OSes, said the firm.

According to the firm, Android’s steady new application growth over the second half of 2009 closed the gap against the iPhone, reaching as many as one out of every three new applications starts within Flurry for December, the recent spike in Apple iPad support has swung the pendulum back in Apple’s favor to a level not seen at Flurry in six months.

For iPad, unprecedented surge in support for iPad is a positive early indicator for its commercial potential, Flurry adds. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the iPhone OS saw a surge after the iPad announcement. Developers are always happy to get a shiny new piece of hardware to play with. And, by most accounts, the additional real estate that the iPad provides is an enormous asset. There’s also just naturally bound to be excitement surrounding any new Apple announcement for the foreseeable future.

Here, question is what, if any, affect Android tablets have had on the numbers. The devices were all over the place at CES, but, not surprisingly, have failed to capture the public’s attention in the same manner at the iPad.

On Thursday, the organization announced that OpenOffice 3.2 is now available for download.

The latest version of the productivity suite- which is intended to be an open-source alternative to Microsoft Office- boasts faster start-up times, ODF support, proprietary file support, support for postscript-based OpenType fonts, and more.

The release comes after OpenOffice.org hit a milestone of 300 million downloads over the course of its 10-year history, 100 million of which occurred from the organization’s main Web site.

The suite includes basic components like word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, and formula and database capabilities. Improvements to those components the version 3.2 boasts, including the Calc spreadsheet. The Chart module, meanwhile, received a “usability makeover” and includes new chart types.

Some people are currently locked in to other personal productivity tools – maybe by corporate IT policy, or by tie-in to other legacy software. For everyone else, we want OpenOffice.org to be the 2010 office software of choice, and 3.2 takes us another step towards that goal,” said Florian Effenberger, marketing project lead of OpenOffice.org.

Version 3.2 is available for download on the organization’s Web site.

Opera announced to release it’s newly developed version of its Opera Mini web browser for Apple’s iPhone, which will be demonstrated at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

The cofounder of Opera Software, Jon von Tetzchner said he is “thrilled” to offer the preview and added that the software provides a “fast, feature-rich” experience for iPhone users. Opera on the iPhone brings the company “one step closer” to its mission of “bringing the web to the world”.

Will Apple Approve?

However, the big question is whether Apple will approve Opera as an iPhone application on its App Store. Apple currently only accepts browsers that run on the WebKit engine — the same engine that powers Apple’s Safari browser.

But Apple has gotten into hot water with the Federal Trade Commission over its initial refusal to certify Voice over Internet Protocol applications, Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, noted. This time around, Apple will be hard-pressed to exclude competitors.

Enderle said, Given Apple is under FTC review for their application approval process, I don’t think they can refuse this application — but they could break it or limit its capability. “For instance, both the ARM processor and the Opera browser support flash on other platforms, but Apple will likely make sure Flash doesn’t work on Opera any better than it does on Safari on the iPhone.”

“Changing defaults will likely be difficult as well,” Enderle added, “so that it is the Safari browser that opens when you click on a link. If Opera gets on the phone, it is likely that [Google's] Chrome will soon follow, and Apple will do whatever it can to make sure that never happens.”

Advanced Features

Currently, Opera Mini 5 in beta boasts quite a few advanced features over Safari, including tabbed browsing so users can view several sites simultaneously and “easily jump from one to another,” the company said. Another feature is Speed Dial, a display of frequently used pages so users can launch a favorite site with just one click, a feature Safari and Chrome offer in desktop versions but not on smartphones. There’s also Opera Link, which synchronizes bookmarks and Speed Dial between the user’s mobile phone and desktop computer, and Download Manager, which manages downloads from the browser.

According to Opera, its browser offers an intuitive, easy-to-user interface, and is much faster than other browsers because it compresses web pages as much as 90 percent before downloading. Other features include adaptive zoom, in-page searching, landscape mode, and kinetic scrolling.

A senior research analyst at IDC, Raman Llamas said, Opera has a great browser and offers a great experience.

Lucky in 2010?

In 2008, von Tetzchner told The New York Times that Opera had started work on an iPhone version of Opera but stopped development because of Apple’s restrictive developer agreements. Apple initially banned all third-party browsers but finally allowed other browsers based on WebKit.

Around this time, von Tetzchner clearly feels he will have more luck with Apple. Indeed, given that Opera is making a big deal about the availability of Opera Mini 5 for iPhone, Opera may have already received Apple’s blessing.

According to Christen Krogh, Opera’s chief development officer, Opera Mini is compatible with every requirement for the App Store. Krogh also said, there aren’t any identical applications on the iPhone, discounting Safari as an identical application. Opera Mini is a different kind of browser, so we cannot see any conflict with any requirements in the App Store.

Krogh said Opera hasn’t yet submitted the application to the App Store. “We’re comfortable enough [with] where Opera Mini is at to show it to select partners and journalists,” he said. “It won’t take long before we’re ready to submit it to the App Store.”

An Apache Software Foundation open source project, Beehive is providing a Java programming model that has been retired due to inactivity, according to the foundation.

Based on the former BEA Weblogic Workshop development tool runtime, Beehive was built on J2EE and the Struts Java Web framework; it used annotations to reduce coding.

According to project management committee chair for the Beehive project, Eddie O’Neil, it’s a project that had been at Apache for several years.

“Over time, the rate of contributions to the project declined, and it just slowed down and we didn’t do any more releases of it,” O’Neil said.

The project has been moved to The Apache Attic, where discontinued projects go. The project got more mature, and it just kind of finished, according to O’Neil.

In 2008, Oracle acquired BEA but the acquisition had no bearing on the discontinuance of the project. O’Neil added that Beehive already had been fairly inactive prior to the deal.

Apache is suggesting alternatives to Beehive technologies.

Beehive NetUI/Page Flow users can switch to Struts 2 or Spring Web Flow while Beehive Controls users can move to Spring Beans. Users of Beehive WSM (Web service metadata) can switch to Axis2’s implementation of Java Specification Request 181, which is entitled, “Web Services Metadata for the Java Platform.”

With the launching a roughly 50-date global road show on the topic for developers and system administrators, Oracle has officially put both the legs on the cloud-computing bandwagon.

In contrast to CEO Larry Ellison’s well-publicized mocking of cloud computing, the move stands, which he has deemed a rebranding and conflation of existing technologies. But it’s not as if the ongoing tour wasn’t telegraphed.

During a recent webcast on how the company plans to use the assets it gained from the purchase of Sun Microsystems, executives indicated Oracle’s main focus will be on helping customers build private clouds. In 2008, Ellison himself said, albeit with sarcasm, that Oracle would make cloud computing announcements in the future.

Ellison said, “If orange is the new pink we’ll make orange blouses. I’m not going to fight this thing”. “Maybe we’ll do an ad. I don’t understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud computing other than … change the wording on some of our ads.”

But the road show will apparently go further than that by detailing in depth Oracle’s particular take on cloud computing, a label that has been slapped on everything from virtualized, scalable pools of computing infrastructure, such as that sold by Amazon Web Services, to SaaS (software-as-a-service) applications.

Events’ attendees will be able to “break through the haze” surrounding the topic, as “Oracle experts” clarify how companies can take advantage of “enterprise cloud computing.” The topics will include the tips to develop a private cloud, how to move current IT environments to a cloud-like structure, and how to use public cloud options such as AWS.

According to 451 Group analyst China Martens, the company simply has to stake a public claim in cloud computing given how pervasive the market forces in this direction are. One issue facing Oracle is how to include the Sun technologies in its plans, and that work is probably not complete, she added.

Already the company has made it clear that it has no immediate designs on Amazon’s turf, as it has abandoned Sun’s plans for a public cloud service. According to Martens, Oracle has sometime to formulate its own answer.

She added, whatever [Ellison] says is going to get lots and lots of play, and sometimes he says whatever comes into his head. And Oracle has to pull back and rephrase that. That’s what they’re doing, but slowly and carefully. They can set their own pace but have to show they’re listening to the market and [are] not in a bubble.

Microsoft’s head of Windows in response to customer complaints said Monday, Window 7 does not ruin notebook batteries or issue premature warnings that the power is exhausted.

Within minutes, Windows 7 users who have experienced those problems disagreed, calling the explanation “hand washing” and noting that if the company’s conclusion was correct, then many affected users must be “under some sort of bizarre bad battery curse.”

Windows 7 is doing what it’s supposed to when it reports that a laptop battery needs to be replaced, one of the symptoms that users began reporting as long ago as June 2009, according to Stephen Sinofsky, the president of the Windows division.

In an entry to the Engineering Windows 7 blog, Sinofsky said Windows 7 is correctly warning batteries to the very best of the collective ecosystem knowledge that are in fact failing. “In every case we have been able to identify the battery being reported on was in fact in need of recommended replacement.”

Sinofsky also dismissed claims by a minority of users that Windows 7 had permanently crippled their notebooks’ batteries. Numerous users said that after upgrading to Windows 7, their batteries’ lifespan was dramatically shortened, and then completely curtailed. Returning to another operating system, even Linux, did not restore the battery’s performance.

Sinofsky said, Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this state. He also added that it was impossible for Windows 7 to harm the battery because of the way the operating system interacts with the hardware.

For Windows 7 or any other OS, there is no way to write, set or configure battery status information. All of the battery actions of charging and discharging are completely controlled by the battery hardware. Some reports erroneously claimed Windows was modifying this information, which is definitely not possible.

According to a battery maker, it was possible that Windows 7 was involved in some way. And a spokeswoman for Boston Power, a Westborough, the operating system usually receives information from system firmware which is responsible for monitoring battery capacity and operation. The firmware she referred to is the PC’s BIOS, which boots the computer and initializes the hardware components.

She also added that if there is an issue with the passing of information between the firmware and the operating system, it might cause improper warnings issued by the OS.

Dell is planning to take some of the custom servers designed by its Data Center Solutions division for Web giants like Yahoo and Facebook and sell them to a wider range of companies, including large enterprises, according to Dell executives.

About three years ago, the DCS unit was formed to help Dell get more business from large Internet firms. Its engineers often spend several weeks on-site with those companies to design low-cost, low-power systems that meet the special requirements of their search, social networking and other Web applications.

In an interview, Dell executives said that hands-on role means the DCS group designs servers only for large companies, such as Ask.com and Microsoft’s Azure division, which order tens of thousands of servers per year, but that’s about to change.

Dell will turn some of those custom servers into standardized products and sell them to companies that order lower volumes of systems later this year, including enterprises building “private cloud” environments in their data centers, and a second tier of smaller Internet companies. They will likely be sold under a new brand, CloudEdge.

Andy Rhodes, a director with Dell’s DCS group, said “What we’ve found is, there are a whole bunch of other customers who want access to those designs but who are not buying in those types of quantities”. “So the big thing we’re solving now, and we’ll talk more publicly about over the next couple of months, is how to provide more of that capability to many, many more customers.”

Dell isn’t discussing specific products yet and is still working out details, such as whether the servers will be sold by DCS or through Dell’s standard server channels. But the goal is to offer the designs to a wider market, even while DCS continues to do custom work for very large customers..

DCS aims to build highly energy-efficient servers that pack a lot of computing power into a small space. The systems often forego redundant power supplies and fans, for example, which saves on component costs and energy bills.

That also makes the servers less resilient to failure — a trade-off large Internet companies are willing to make for lower operational costs. Companies like Google and Yahoo design their Web applications to run on such “fail in place” architectures, so that workloads are rerouted around failed servers with little or no disruption to services.

According to Barton George, cloud evangelist for Dell, the main thing with these hyperscale systems is that the availability and resiliency are baked into the customers’ applications rather than into the hardware.

Important Search Engine Optimisation Marketing issues to consider-

Ensure that the approach, strategies and techniques that are planned are dynamic enough to mould to the specific requirements of your website

Be wary of so-called “free” services and “guaranteed results”; you don’t see this offered by your lawyer or accountant, nor should you expect this from your SEO professional

Be prepared to regular, interesting and fresh content as this can build a stronger linking interest and encourage more return visitors

Understand that great SEO Marketing results take time to achieve but are also long lasting

Ask how many are on the SEO team, who exactly is going to be working on your project and ensure that you meet with or talk to them before committing to an SEO program

Set specific targets and goals, after all, this space is probably the most measurable of all media when it comes to assessing ROI

At Microsoft Office, IBM’s Lotus division has taken another stab, releasing a beta 2 version of Symphony 3.0, its free suite of productivity applications.

Beta-based on OpenOffice 3.x. that released on Thursday, is the first version of Symphony. Users have been asking the company to make Symphony’s features more competitive with Microsoft Office, the dominant productivity suite among corporate users. Lotus claims more than 12 million users of Symphony, which is available in 28 languages.

Jeanette Barlow, manager of Lotus Symphony, said the OpenOffice 3 code means we pick up a lot of improvements both from the ODF file format as well as the core code base. She says it is the most significant step forward since the first Symphony beta was released in 2007.

IBM Lotus, along with many others, is trying to provide alternatives to Microsoft Office, which has dominated for years. With companies segmenting their user base and assessing needs, many are looking at less expensive alternatives to Office.

One corporate hook in Symphony 3.0 is support of VB Marcos, which lets users run on Symphony customized applications built on Microsoft Office software.

Also new is support for ODF 1.2, which enhances existing Symphony access features for Word 2007, and audio/visual features that let users add content directly to slides and documents. Lotus also has added digital signature support, editing features, graphic objects rendering, richer Java and LotusScript APIs, and an add-on installer for Notes.

It also continues support for the .docx format that was at the heart of the i4i patent infringement suit against Microsoft.

Symphony 3.0 represents the first push from Lotus to update its Symphony tools, and the company plans to follow with two more releases in the coming 12 to 14 months. IBM Lotus plans to follow up Vienna with a “feature enablement and maintenance” update code-named Amsterdam by the October. The release will further refine VBA macros and Office 2007 support and include document filters for the HTML file format. The release also will include enhancements to APIs for presentation and documents, templates for business content, and central management tweaks centered on preference, policy and deployment.

In the first half of 2011, IBM Lotus plans to again update the Symphony suite with more VB macro enhancements, improve links to other Lotus software such as Foundations and Connections, and add more API enhancements.

The Symbian Foundation has given the Symbian mobile operating system a second life, making the smartphone platform open source. The lifeline will revitalize the platform, and has benefits for Nokia, smartphone developers, Symbian handsets, and smartphone users.

With all of the hype and attention devoted to the iPhone, it’s easy to forget that Symbian is actually the leading smartphone operating system in the world. Symbian has nearly as much market share as the rest of its competitors combined–including the iPhone, with more than 330 million Symbian smartphones in use.

If Symbian is so dominant, why should Nokia spin it off, and why should the Symbian Foundation make it open source? The answer is that the Symbian is yesterday’s smartphone operating system. It may be dominant, but it’s declining.

Globally, Symbian has a huge footprint, but RIM and Apple have been steadily chipping away at it. It is somewhat geriatric compared with next-generation smartphone operating systems like iPhone and Android.

For the Symbian platform, the move to open source is a good move with benefits at all levels.

Here are five ways an open source Symbian is good for the smartphone platform:

1. Nokia. From the transition to open source, Nokia will be benefited because it pumps new blood into the waning platform without any effort or investment from Nokia.

While Nokia moves on to creating new devices built on its Linux-based Maemo platform, it will still gain a marketing and public relations boost from its relationship with Symbian and its dominant contribution to the development of the smartphone platform.

2. Smartphone Manufacturers. The availability of Symbian as an open source operating system gives smartphone manufacturers an alternative to Google’s Android. Android has demonstrated that an open source mobile operating system can be a very effective platform–enabling smartphone vendors to customize the OS, and develop robust devices at a lower cost (or higher profit margin) due to the lack of associated licensing fees.

Some manufacturers may be interested in leveraging an open source platform, yet be reluctant to partner too closely with Google. Even vendors who have embraced Android may be looking for alternatives now that Google has entered the market as a direct competitor with the Nexus One.

3. Developers. Making the source code of the Symbian operating system available as open source opens up a huge market for developers. Symbian will never achieve the rabid success of the iPhone App Store, but it’s hard to ignore a market of 330 million potential customers. Just based on economy of scale, even a mediocre Symbian app could be quite lucrative.

4. Businesses. Taking the developers benefit in a different direction, companies of all sizes will benefit from the ability to customize the platform, and develop unique applications to integrate Symbian smartphones with the enterprise, and streamline business processes.

For businesses that are already invested in Symbian-based smartphones, an open source Symbian can extend the useful life of the devices and enable the company to maximize the investment it’s already made rather than allocating precious budget dollars to smartphone upgrades.

5. Users. The 330 million Symbian users of the world get some new life as well. As developers embrace the open source Symbian and begin to create innovative applications for the smartphones, Symbian users will benefit from new features and functionality without having to trade their devices in for an iPhone or a Nexus One.

The transition to open source isn’t necessarily all wine and roses, though. As different developers take the open source code in different directions, there is a risk of the platform forking and creating some confusion as far as which Symbian will work with which Symbian smartphones.

Making Symbian open source may stop some of the hemorrhaging of market share Symbian has experienced, and it is almost guaranteed to extend the useful life of the platform. However, it is still yesterday’s smartphone platform and Symbian’s days are still numbered–the number is just higher now.

Last night, Mozilla announced that two experimental Firefox add-ons, Master Filer and the Sothink Web Video Downloader version 4, infected victim PCs with Trojans when either add-on was installed.

The small-distribution extensions were previously available via Mozilla’s add-on site, but have since been removed. According to Mozilla’s post, the Master Filer add-on had been downloaded about 600 times and installed the Bifrose Trojan. The Sothink Web Video Downloader version 4 slipped in the LdPinch Trojan, and had been downloaded about 4,000 times.

According to the open-source organization, the malicious add-ons managed to sneak by the one malware scanner (unnamed in the post) used by Mozilla. The organization says it will now be scanning with two additional detection tools.

If you happen to have installed either of these malicious add-ons, note that removing the add-on will not remove any installed Trojan. You’ll need to run a separate antivirus scan and disinfection to clean your system. Mozilla’s post includes a list of antivirus software currently known to detect the particular Trojans involved.

This unfortunate incident makes clear why relying solely on one antivirus scanner is never a good idea, as no one program detects everything. Since this has happened at least once before with an infected Vietnamese language pack, I’m curious why Mozilla doesn’t simply switch to uploading all add-on submissions to the free Virustotal.com, which uses about 40 different engines to scan each submission. I’ve also asked Mozilla which scanner it had been using. If I get that information I’ll add it to this post.

According to Mozilla, it had been using ClamAV as its sole scanner prior to this incident. I’d guess Mozilla feels it’s a natural match as an open-source app, but the ClamAV engine didn’t fare well at detection tests when I reviewed the Windows version of the program, ClamWin.

On Friday, Microsoft said Bing will power Internet searches for Facebook’s 400 million members in an arrangement that returns control of display advertising to the social-networking service.

Previously, Bing had powered online searches on US Facebook pages.

According to Bing general manager Jon Tinter, Microsoft will provide Facebook users full access to Bing features as part of an “expanded cooperation in search”. You will start to see the fruits of our expanded relationship show up in the Facebook experience over the weeks and months ahead, he said.

According to Tinter, the companies mutually agreed that Facebook will take over selling display advertising posted at the website because it “just made more sense” given the unique nature of the website.

The control over the displaying advertisement by Microsoft served up at Facebook stretched back to shortly before the US software giant bought a 1.6-percent stake in Facebook in 2007 for 240 million dollars.

The arrangement was inked in a contract, which was up for renewal.

Last year, Microsoft launched its new Bing search engine.

Reportedly, Amazon.com has purchased a leading touchscreen innovator in an apparent bid to add more functionality to its Kindle e-book reader. With Apple set to begin shipping its highly anticipated iPad tablet computer in less than two months with an iBooks application and multimedia capability, Amazon is under pressure to keep its share of the market.

An application store has also been announced by Amazon. And this week produced a software development kit for “active content” that includes sample code and a simulator. The company plans to add puzzles, games and travel guides to selections that readers can download.
However, Amazon reportedly will exclude applications that use the Voice over Internet Protocol.

Playing Catch-Up

Some analysts are skeptical that the Kindle can avoid being swamped by the iPad tsunami. According to Michael Gartenberg, a vice president at Interpret, it depends on what else they add, adding touch to the existing Kindle seems gratuitous and actually can work against E Ink legibility.

Currently, E Ink, the largest supplier of electronic-paper display technology, provides the Kindle’s monochrome display. Gartenberg questioned why the world’s leading online retailer would want to compete with hardware giants.

He asked, “if the question is, is Amazon thinking of a new generation of devices that can more effectively compete with the iPad, the better question is, should Amazon be in the device business at all [instead of focusing] on adding value to other devices?”

For the iPad’s basic model, the price is $499, which is almost double the Kindle’s $259; it was set lower than the anticipated $700 to compete with the e-reader.

According to the New York Times, Amazon has purchased Touchco, a company that manufactures a highly sensitive touchscreen that costs only $10 a square foot, far cheaper than the screen used in Apple’s devices. The screen has unlimited touch points and is able to distinguish between fingers and pens or styluses.

Currently, the Kindle relies on a hardware keyboard for data entry.

Multi-Touch Is In

About multi-touch capability, the report is the second in two days, which is designed to tackle the iPhone and iPodedge in that realm. On Wednesday, Google announced that its Nexus One smartphone now has a software patch to enable “pinch and zoom” for maps, photos and search results.

Neither Amazon nor Touchco’s representative would comment for its report, but citing “a person briefed on the deal,” the paper reported that Amazon’s hardware facility, Lab 126, will merge with Touchco, which began as a project at New York University’s research lab.

According to Touchco’s web site, the company is no longer doing business as of last month.

In June, Collins Stewart analyst Sandeep Aggarwal predicted that the Kindle would generate $310 million in revenue for Amazon in 2009 and $2 billion a year by 2012, with gross profit reaching $70 million, and $560 million in 2012.

Videogame star “Fallout 3” is taking its devoted fans to nuclear war ravaged Las Vegas. Bethesda Softworks announced Thursday that a “New Vegas” chapter in the award-winning franchise will be available by the end of this year. A video trailer has been posted online by the studio at fallout.bethsoft.com.

According to Bethesda, ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ takes all the action, humor, and post-apocalyptic grime and grit of this legendary series, and raises the stakes.

After the release of “Fallout 3” in 2008, it was crowned Game of the Year, and proved so popular that Bethesda has expanded on it with adventures in an array of downloadable software.

A “Broken Steel” addition to “Fallout 3″ even modified the end of the original game to resurrect the hero, who had sacrificed himself for the sake of other survivors in the post nuclear war scenario.

“Fallout 3″ players start out as a youth venturing out of an underground survival bunker to search for a scientist father and make moral choices shaping his or her destiny.

Players take on quests such as freeing slaves, rescuing hostages, and integrating an elitist survivor settlement.

Conversations players have with in-world characters affect directions stories take, with choices regarding whether to do good or evil determining their reputations, opportunities and allies.

What’s Apple’s problem with flash? After three years of the introduction of the iPhone, Apple’s refusal to include Flash on its soon-to-be-released iPad has sparked another kerfuffle between Apple and Flash maker Adobe Systems.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch in a lengthy blog post railed against Apple’s Flash avoidance and detailed why Flash has become successful on the non-iPhone part of the web. From its humble start allowing low-bandwidth vector animations on the web, Flash now includes animation, streaming audio, rich interactivity, arbitrary fonts, two-way audio/video communication, local storage, and “enabling the video revolution on the web, Lynch wrote.

Lynch wrote in blog that the explosion of smartphones and the imminent wave of tablet devices — including the iPad — means an “important crux for the future of Flash”. A plethora of devices in the mobile with different web-browsing capabilities threatens to break up what Flash largely built — “seamless, consistent and rich experiences,” he added.

Flash for Smartphones

According to Lynch, “Adobe is attempting to manage the transition to the mobile web with a version of the Flash player for smartphones — which will be deployed by all but one of the top manufacturers”. Any Guesses…

Flash works just fine on Apple’s devices, Lynch wrote. Adobe is developing stand-alone apps built on Flash that are currently available on the App Store. “This same solution will work on the iPad as well. We are ready to enable Flash in the browser on these devices if and when Apple chooses to allow that for its users, but to date we have not had the required cooperation from Apple to make this happen,” Lynch charged.

HTML5 Won’t Replace Flash

Apple is a supporter of the open-standard HTML5, which it says will eventually replace Flash. According to Lynch, he doesn’t think so. If HTML could reliably do everything Flash does, that would certainly save us a lot of effort, but that does not appear to be coming to pass.

“The coming HTML video implementations cannot agree on a common format across browsers, so users and content creators would be thrown back to the dark ages of video on the web with incompatibility issues,” Lynch wrote.

At the iPad’s introduction, Apple CEO Steve Jobs called Flash “buggy,” a charge Lynch denied in his post. “Regarding crashing, I can tell you that we don’t ship Flash with any known crash bugs, and if there was such a widespread problem historically, Flash could not have achieved its wide use today,” Lynch wrote. “Addressing crash issues is a top priority in the engineering team, and currently there are open reports we are researching in Flash Player 10.”

Battle of the Titans

Greg Sterling, principal analyst with Sterling Market Research, said in a phone interview that this really all comes down to market power. “There’s a lot at stake for Adobe here. If Apple continues to gain and the iPad is a hit, and there are millions of devices out there that Flash is not compatible with, it’s a danger for them.”

As the phone was an “app” device, then the lack of Flash on the iPhone wasn’t a huge deal, it’s a different world with the larger iPad screen. According to Sterling, it was very jarring to see Jobs scrolling around the {New York] Times site and all these blue boxes where there should have been videos.

Sterling said, it seems really foolish at one level for Apple to shun Flash — it’s a media device and it needs to be able to play media. “On the other hand, perhaps it’s the height of arrogance where Apple thinks they can move the whole world to their technological choices.”

On Thursday, the Symbian Foundation will move forward with offering up the full Symbian smartphone platform to open source.

With the applications, middleware and the Kernel itself, the Symbian 3 platform will be offered under terms of the Eclipse Public License and other open source licenses. According to Larry Berkin, head of global alliances for the foundation, “you can download it, you can modify it”. Previously, the kernel was made available via open source.

Berkin said they’re open-sourcing 108 packages that will be available at the source code level. Handset manufacturers can modify the code and build differentiated handsets, he added.

According to Berkin, the foundation members accelerated the process originally due to be fully open-sourced by June. Code, more than 40 million lines of it, will be available at Symbian’s Website at 6 a.m. Pacific Time.

“End-users will see, ideally, differentiated devices, converged devices that are based on Symbian that range from smartphones [to converged devices],” such as cameras or a phone that is a gaming device, he said.

According to Berkin, the open-sourcing could possibly result in incompatible, forked versions of the platform, and manufacturers need to be responsible for their work with Symbian. The market can be self-correcting in situations such as this, he said.

There are 330 million Symbian-based devices in use, said Berkin. Five manufacturers currently build Symbian devices: Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Fujitsu, and Sharp.

Symbian technology had been driven by Symbian Limited, the majority of which was owned by Nokia, which then spun it out as an open source project.

Putting Symbian into open source will boost the platform in the marketplace, said analyst William Stofega, program manager for mobile device technology and trends at IDC. Development Kits are also available to download for building Symbian applications and mobile devices. These include the Symbian Developer Kit and the Product Development Kit.

In November 2009, Nokia put the Linux-based Maemo OS on its high-end N900 “mobile computer,” which features a phone and capabilities like email, a Web browser, and video. But the company remains a backer of Symbian, according to Nokia representatives.

A Web-browsing tablet device, the Joojoo, which is the subjects of a high-profile Silicon Valley legal dispute, appears on track to reach early buyers at the end of February.

After the technology blog TechCrunch, the flat touch-screen computer was known until December as the CrunchPad. It was born from a post by the blog’s well-connected and outspoken founder, Michael Arrington that called for collaborators on a “dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen Web tablet.”

Singapore-based Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan stepped up. His software startup, Fusion Garage, worked with Arrington and his team until November. And at that point the project imploded, with Fusion Garage announcing it would sell the device under a new name — and without Arrington’s involvement.

The production of the Joojoo is under way, said Rathakrishnan Wednesday, despite a federal lawsuit filed by Arrington. CSL Group, a Malaysia-based mobile phone and netbook maker, is subsidizing production costs in exchange for an undisclosed revenue share, according to Rathakrishnan.

Arrington is seeking damages and to keep Fusion Garage from selling or profiting from the Joojoo device. His lawyer didn’t return a message seeking comment about whether they might take further legal action.

CSL, which makes Blackberry-like phones it calls “Blueberry,” will also be an investor in the startup’s next round of funding, expected to close in the next two weeks. Late last year, Fusion Garage said it raised $3 million in a first round.

In an interview, Rathakrishnan would not specify how many people pre-ordered the $499 tablet, but “a good part” of those who did will receive their devices at the end of this month, he said.

Dramatically, the tablet landscape has changed since the Joojoo was first unveiled. At the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and others presented tablet prototypes. Less than a month later, Apple Inc. took the wraps off a long-anticipated version it calls the iPad.

Apple’s iPhone upended the smart phone category, leaving competitors scrambling to come out with touch-screen phones and application stores of their own. Many analysts expect Apple’s iPad to define the nascent tablet category in the same way.

However, Rathakrishnan said he believes the Joojoo gives consumers a better experience than the iPad because it has a larger screen and people will use it to surf the “real” Web, or sites they see on their regular PCs, rather than consume bits and pieces delivered through add-on apps.

He also implied Apple had imitated Fusion Garage in its development and marketing of the iPad. Both devices start at $499, Rathakrishnan noted, and Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, made his presentation from what looked like a couch after Fusion Garage described the Joojoo as perfect for “couch computing.”

Apple didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.

SEO marketing encompasses a range of innovative strategies that allow you to use search engines to your best advantage. By optimizing your page content for targeted key phrases, and developing strategic links in the internal architecture of your site, you can achieve higher rankings on major search engines, giving your business a real advantage in the online market place.

Almost 90 percent of internet users look no further than the first two pages of search engine results. Most prefer to use another keyword phrase or even another search engine rather than click past the first ten results. Your business cannot succeed if you’re not found in those first few results.

And one third users think that the websites found on the first page of the search results are the market leaders for their particular product ranges.

SEO Marketing has been proven to deliver a higher ROI than pay-per-click, banner advertising or even email marketing

All1Sourcetechnologies provide proven search engine optimization results using only ethical techniques. Our search engine marketing ensures a high return on investment by achieving maximum visibility for your website within major search engines including Google, MSN & Yahoo!
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

Some of the most basic aspects of search engine optimization include:

• Finding words and phrases that Internet users are looking for. Target the wrong keywords and your efforts will be in vain.
• Placing these important words and phrases in prominent places on each page, for example page title, headings, links
• Writing efficient HTML code that search engines can easily sift through
• Providing great content that other websites will want to link to

Joomla 1.6 is the next generation of Joomla, the most popular Open Source Content Management System in the world.

The broad goals of Joomla 1.6 are to:

•	implement an expanded access control system;
•	implement a nested categories solution;
•	add a commenting system;
•	and standardize the way extensions are built using the MVC framework.

To achieve those things there is a lot of other ancillary work to be done, but those are the highlights of this new version.

Apart from some user interface improvements the new access control and nested categories systems are feature complete. The access control system is progressively coming online throughout the administrator as is the nested category system. The new comments system has not been added to the core stack yet.

Currently, most work focuses on finishing the backend Administrator, bringing all extensions up to a common standard. The following Administrator extensions are “Beta ready“, which means they are essentially feature complete, at a consistent code standard and ready for rigorous testing.

•	Articles manager
•	Banners manager
•	Configuration manager (used for Global Configuration and Component options)
•	Modules manager
•	Messages (private) manager
•	Newsfeeds manager
•	Plugins manager
•	Redirect manager (a new component to redirect old page links to new ones)
•	Search manager
•	Template manager (including new “styles”)
•	User manager (includes ability to add new user groups and content access levels)
•	Weblinks manager

After the Department of Health (DoH) released an urgent bulletin of advising all NHS Trusts to use Internet Explorer 6 to upgrade their browser, the fallout from the Chinese hack on Google’s system continued.

According to Microsoft, a critical flaw in Internet Explorer had been the route by which Chinese hackers sought to infiltrate Google’s corporate systems, a flaw that it later admitted to knowing about for months.

And Microsoft has since issued an out-of-band patch for the problem, which can allow remote code execution on affected systems. But the company is recommending users to upgrade to IE8, which has security measures which will make the exploit code difficult to implement effectively.

And now the DoH Informatics Directorate has issued its own guidance for NHS Trusts, urging them to implement the fix as soon as possible. The bulletin also recommended that “organizations still using IE6 on the affected platforms upgrade to IE7″.

The directive added that the IE7 has been warranted to work correctly with NHS Spine applications such as CSA, and provides additional security features over IE6.

No further information has been provided bye the DoH, and is presumably not recommending an upgrade to the newest version of Microsoft’s browser, IE8, because of support issues with these key applications.

Oracle announced its intentions with Sun products, although Apple’s iPad announcement has eclipsed, and now the acquisition of Sun Microsystems is compete.

The announcement was actually a planned webcast, which reassured those worried over the fate of two open-source Sun products for small business: the database software, MySQL and the productivity suite,OpenOffice.org. The acquisition might make MySQL and OpenOffice.org even more competitive against costly Microsoft counterparts (SQL Server and Microsoft Office).

OpenOffice.org has already proven a worthy alternative to the stranglehold Microsoft has in the productivity suite space for SMBs. And Last year, OpenOffice.org reached its one hundred millionth download. Yet, Sun has still not managed to make great headway in the productivity space.

Forrester’s research reported last year that 80% of businesses still use Microsoft Office. Oracle will be able to push competition against Microsoft in a way that Sun never could quite accomplish.

Oracle is also poised to offer a cloud-based productivity suite that leverages the awesomeness of OpenOffice.org into a real competitor against Google Docs/Apps.

Oracle’s plan to keep MySQL Community Edition free, as well as spend more on research and development for it than Sun did in its most recent fiscal year, bodes well for MySQL.

The database savvy of Oracle and MySQL developers can make MySQL into a formidable competitor to MS SQL and the database of choice for small to mid size business.

For small business, it’s a win. Both products will stay free; they work well already and only stand to get better with Oracle’s backing.

Small business has reason to cheer Oracle’s acquisition of Sun, now that it appears OpenOffice.org and MySQL look to do well–perhaps better–under new ownership.

Time will tell, but market forces may make the OpenOffice.org suite important to Sun. MySQL is protected, in part, by an agreement with the European Commission.

This week, Oracle took control of Sun and held a webcast to detail its plans. Most of those plans are enterprise in nature, but some impact SMB customers as well.

MySQL is a key Internet technology for many businesses and can be seen as competing with Oracle’s legacy database products. And the good news is that Oracle has promised to continue to offer a free MySQL and is taking a mostly hands-off approach to the MySQL commercial products, which retain their own sales and development organizations.

Oracle has already committed to a cloud-based apps suite, dubbed Cloud Office, which is positioned to compete with Microsoft and Google. OpenOffice.org could play an important part in the project, given both its installed based and the value of its technology and brand.

OpenOffice.org alternately could remain what it is today, and be totally independent of Cloud Office. Oracle has not said what will happen to StarOffice, Sun’s paid version of OpenOffice.org.

While no one will confuse Oracle with a company that specializes in small-business solutions, it has become a player there and is likely to increase its presence in that market.

Generally, Oracle has got good marks for its plans to keep most Sun products and technologies alive and even invest more resources in many of them. Both OpenOffice.org and MySQL benefit from the Oracle take-over, mostly because Sun had become so enfeebled in recent years.

For MySQL, a strong and independent Sun would be a better home, but given Sun’s lack of success in popularizing OpenOffice.org, that software might do better under Oracle’s stewardship. While OpenOffice.org recently celebrated its 100 millionth download, it took a decade and multiple releases to reach that milestone.

MySQL is much more important than OpenOffice.org, in that it powers so many Web sites and applications. When the acquisition was announced there were immediate concerns that Oracle would kill it as a competitor to its own SQL products.

Firefox 3.6, the latest version of Mozilla’s popular browser, was released Thursday, featuring a 20 percent speed improvement over version 3.5, Mozilla said.

The browser includes improvements to boost performance for everyday Web tasks like e-mail, uploading of photos, and social networking. JavaScript performance is improved, as are overall browser responsiveness and startup time.

“Firefox 3.6 is built on Mozilla’s Gecko 1.9.2 Web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for Web developers, add-on developers, and users,” according to the Firefox 3.6 Web page. “This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions and has been optimized to run on small device operating systems such as Maemo.”

Other key capabilities include:

•	Open audio and video, via an implementation of HTML 5 audio and video; video can be displayed full-screen, and poster frames are supported
•	Personas, to personalize the look of Firefox
•	Plugin Updater, offering protection against vulnerabilities; out-of-date plug-ins will be detected
•	Stability improvements to decrease crashes caused by third-party software
•	Form Complete, in which the browser suggests information for form fields based on common answers in a similar field

Social Search service from Google, which includes public content from users’ social networks in search results, is getting promoted to Google.com from the company’s Labs site, meaning it is no longer considered an early prototype.

Google, in the coming days, will let English-language users of its search engine see relevant links to items their social-networking contacts have posted publicly on the Web. According to the company, Social Search results will also appear in the Google Images engine.

To use Social Search, users have to be signed in to their Google account. Google also recommends that people create a Google Profile, which they can then populate with addresses to their blogs, social networks, and photo-sharing accounts and so on. Google can then harvest the contacts and connections in those sites, as well as in Google services like Gmail and Google Reader, and index publicly available, relevant content for these users’ Social Search query results.

Many potential improvements and extensions to Social Search Google see in the near future, as it is slapping a “beta” tag on it, to indicate the product is likely to evolve considerably. “We think there’s tremendous potential for social information to improve search, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface,” wrote Maureen Heymans, technical lead for Social Search, and Terran Melconian, technical lead for Social Image Search, in the blog post..

In addition to the Social Search effort, Google is also indexing public posts from social networks and returning links to them in search results even for users who aren’t signed in to their Google account. Recently, Google has started inserting such links into its main list of results, as well as giving users the option to only see these types of results for their query.

According to industry analyst Greg Sterling from Sterling Market Intelligence, incorporating social-networking content into its search index is both a necessary complement to its search results and a competitive move for Google.

Content from sites like Twitter has proven increasingly valuable for identifying trends and for following breaking news events. Google is aware that Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and other social networks are nabbing a bigger portion of the time people spend online.

He said, you can see [social-network search results] as a valuable new source of information and content that helps people makes decisions and be informed. “You can also see this as an attempt to preempt the defection of people to these other services.”

Sterling also added that there is both an objective reason for doing it and a competitive reason. Both are present here in this product launch.

After spending years using open source Apache Software Foundation (ASF) technologies to help build its social networking site, Facebook is now spending its money to give back to effort.

Facebook is now a gold sponsor of the ASF, contributing $40,000 per year to the open source foundation and its initiatives. Facebook uses a number of Apache technologies, including Hadoop.

“A sponsor provides a direct monetary contribution to the ASF, which we can use for a variety of functions, such as increasing or updating our infrastructure, sponsoring project meet-ups and paying our bills,” ASF Chairman Jim Jagielski told InternetNews.com. “This extends and enhances the relationship that the ASF has had with Facebook.”

The ASF just recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, and is home to many popular open source projects including the Apache HTTP Web server. One of the hallmarks of the ASF is that it is a meritocracy for developers, and that money is not the key influencer for technical decisions.

Jagielski noted that his group is a volunteer-based, individual membership organization, and it is not possible for companies or other non-person entities to “join” the ASF.

“All code development, including governance and direction, is done by the members of the project community itself,” Jagielski said. “It is also a factor of how the ASF works … that people are recognized via their individual contribution, regardless of what company they happen to have employment with.”

Under that framework, sponsors don’t have any additional “pull” or “power” related to actual projects, Jagielski said.

Facebook is no stranger to the ASF, and according to Jagielski, it was Facebook developer David Recordon who approached the ASF about a potential sponsorship.

“If you read our engineering blog, you’ll know that it’s not possible to scale a site like Facebook simply by sharding your databases, but rather takes a combination of specialized technologies,” Recordon wrote in a blog post. “Open source allows us not just to make technologies like memcached scale beyond its original intent, but to release technologies like Thrift for others to build upon as well.”

Thrift is a framework for scalable cross-language services development that was originally known as Facebook scribe. It was contributed to Apache in October of 2008.

Even as a gold sponsor of the ASF, Facebook does not contribute as much to the open source effort as proprietary vendor Microsoft. Starting in 2008, Microsoft began sponsoring the ASF with a $1 million a year commitment.

The ASF would like to continue to see other organizations join with Facebook, Microsoft and others to pad its roster of sponsors.

“Our hope is that any organization that finds value in the ASF and what we do will give back to the community,” Jagielski said. “Obviously, one prime method of doing this is by submitting patches and bug reports, allowing us to further improve the various ASF codebases. But we also realize that some organizations would prefer a more direct, financial way of supporting us, and we created the sponsorship program specifically to address that need.”

Windows Service applications are long-running applications that are ideal for use in server environments. The applications do not have a user interface or produce any visual output. Any user messages are typically written to the Windows Event Log. Services can be automatically started when the computer is booted. They do not require a logged in user in order to execute and can run under the context of any user including the system. Windows Services are controlled through the Service Control Manager where they can be stopped, paused, and started as needed.

Windows Services, formerly NT Services, were introduced as a part of the Windows NT operating system. They are not available on Windows 9x and Windows Me. You need to use one of the operating systems in the NT generation such as Windows NT, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows 2000 Server to run a Windows Service. Examples of Windows Services are server products such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and other applications such as Windows Time that sets the computer clock.

For the first time, Sun is updating Java this year providing fixes for over 300 bugs. While the total bug tally may seem high, the latest Java update more about enhancing features and performance than it is about security fixes.

That’s because Java SE 6 Update 18 (also known as 6u18) does not include any security updates at all—unlike its predecessor, Java SE 6 Update 17, which was released in November 2009 and included fixes for multiple vulnerabilities. Still, that doesn’t make the new update—which may turn out to be the last from Sun (NASDAQ: JAVA) before it is acquired by Oracle—any less significant.

To Dave Hofert, senior group marketing manager for the Java Platform Group at Sun, the release marks a high-water mark for Java.

According to Hofert, the largest improvement in this release is the performance work that we did for our virtual machine, called HotSpot. “This helps improve performance for both Java and JavaFX applications.” After that, we have improved the usability of the Java installer (we have replaced the underlying installer mechanism) and of Java Web Start applications,” with a clearer progress bar, he said.

Other improvements in 6u18 usher in still more performance gains. For instance, with the new release, Sun noted that that jar file creation is faster.

The 6u18 release notes state that the fix of a long-standing bug related to jar file creation has greatly improved creation time. It also improves the startup time for Java applications and applets. JavaFX, in particular, gets a runtime speed boost. JavaFX is Sun’s effort to create an RIA that aims to compete against AJAX, Flash and Silverlight. With the 6u18 update, Sun’s efforts have improved the start of JavaFX applications by as much as 15 percent, it said.

The performance of user interface (UI) applications also gets a boost by way of smaller memory consumption by text rasterizer and faster processing of images. Memory handling overall has been improved with the 6u18 release as well.

The Sun release notes state that in the Client JVM (Java Virtual Machine), the default Java heap configuration has been modified to improve the performance of today’s rich client applications. “Initial and maximum heap sizes are larger and settings related to generational garbage collection are better tuned.”

With Java SE 6 Update 18, Sun has also makes it possible to read larger .ZIP files of up to 4 gigabytes in size. Previous Java releases were limited to being able to read .ZIP files of only 2GB or less.

Java Security Updates to Come

Sun provides two different types of Java updates: General releases with bug fixes and enhancements, such as 6u18; and security-only updates, which take place three times a year.

“The reason we do this is that many enterprise customers wish to adopt the security updates as fast as possible and we try to minimize the number of changes so as to minimize our customer’s testing cycle,” Hofert said. He added the next security release will occur later this quarter.
