File system and hard disk issues can be due to a variety of problems, which includes power outages, improper system maintenance, virus infection, human errors, hardware problems, etc. When this type of problems occurs, then the consequences are directly reflected in operations like installing a new application, accessing an existing file or folder, repairing the existing installations, and many more. Thus, one can easily analyze the file system corruption. And In worst cases, you might need to reformat the entire hard drive partitions and seek the help of Partition http://www.all1tunes.comRecovery tools, especially when no data backup is available.

Let’s check out the problem, which can occur when trying to set up or repair Microsoft Office on a Windows hard disk. Specifically, when you attempt to repair or install Microsoft Office 2002 (XP), Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office 2007, the setup may exit silently without notifying or displaying any error message on screen. For say, when you try to install or repair Office, it prompts you to specify the Product Identification key, but exits unexpectedly.

For typical Office setup failure, you can examine the associated log file, which is created by Office Setup in \Temp folder in .txt format. This file might contain one of the below or similar log entries with different module and function:

Exception code: C0000006 IN_PAGE_ERROR Module: C:\WINDOWS\System32\msi.dll Function: 0×7642452f

Or

Exception code: C0000006 IN_PAGE_ERROR Module: C:\WINDOWS\system32\IMAGEHLP.dll Function: 0×76c94afa

The depicted problem, as mentioned, is generally the result of file system damage or hard disk problems. Thus, to resolve the problem, consider implementing the solutions mentioned underneath:

‘Analyze’ and then ‘Defragment’ the hard disk using Disk Defragmenter tool. To do so, you must have administrative rights to access the partition/volume.

Repair the disk using Autochk.exe, Chkdsk.exe,, and Chkntfs.exe tools. If the problem persists, reformat the hard disk and restore the deleted data from backup. Use a Partition Recovery Software than any kind of backup issues.

Use of a Partition Recovery utility allows to scan the logically crashed hard disk and restore the lost/deleted partitions in just few simple steps.

Themes can be used to customize the look of your Website. If you need to select the theme based on user settings, you’ll be glad to know that ASP.NET allows you to set the theme of a page dynamically when the page is being created. This process is pretty straight forward; however, there are a couple of issues that may arise.

First of all, ASP.NET establishes the current theme prior to the page’s Load() event. In order to dynamically change the theme before the Load() event, you’ll need to set it during the page’s PreInit() event.

Setting the Theme in the PreInit() Event

That was easy enough. But what happens if your site uses a master page? Master pages allow you to control the appearance of all the pages on your site from a single master page. So it makes sense to want to set the theme from the master page. However, master pages do not provide a PreInit() event. So setting the theme dynamically from a master page is not as easy as you might guess.

One way to deal with this is to create a class that derives from IHttpModule. This class can be made to respond to all page requests on your site, and it gets called just before the request is handled, in plenty of time to set the theme for the current page.

public class ThemeManager : IHttpModule

{
   public ThemeManager()

    {

    }

  public void Init(HttpApplication app)

    {

        // Set our handler to be called just before handling a request

        app.PreRequestHandlerExecute +=

            new EventHandler(Context_PreRequestHandlerExecute);

    }

  void Context_PreRequestHandlerExecute(object sender, EventArgs e)

    {

        // Note: If handler does not implement IRequiresSessionState or

        // IReadOnlySessionState then Session state will be unavailable

        if (HttpContext.Current.CurrentHandler is Page)

        {

            // Set theme

            Page page = (Page)HttpContext.Current.CurrentHandler;

            page.Theme = "MyTheme";

        }

        public void Dispose()

        {

        }

    }

}

Setting the Theme from an IHttpModule-Derived Class

In order to use this class, you’ll have to modify your web.config file.

<configuration>

<system.web>

<httpModules>

<add />

</httpModules>

</system.web>

</configuration>

Web.config Changes

Also, be sure to clear any theme settings from your web.config file. Otherwise, it’s possible for ASP.NET to get confused and possibly reference multiple CSS files.

ASP.NET themes are quite powerful, and can be used to manage the appearance of various controls and images. Another thing themes do is let you specify CSS, or style sheets. If this is all your themes are used for, then a much simpler approach can be taken.

All you need to do is add a Literal control inside of the <head> section of your master page. Then, you can set it to include your style sheet during the master page’s Load event.

Since you aren’t modifying the look of controls using skins, there is no need to change this setting in the PreInit() handler. In fact, you could handle it even later than the Load event since all that needs to happen is your page references the correct CSS file.

http://www.all1tunes.com

http://www.all1social.com

If we have an ASP.Net website that:
1.	We want to pre-compile before deploying to the live servers for the usual reasons of performance (no delay on first hit) and security (source code not hosted on the servers)
2.	Before starting the web application, we automatically generate its web.config file
3.	By default we want to disable view state in all the pages by adding a
node in the generated web.config
The main issue was that even though the generated web.config file had the correct setting in it, the view state wasn’t being disabled. This confused us for quite a while.
It turns out that the default setting when a website is compiled by the ASP.Net compiler doesn’t allow subsequent updates to the site.
In our particular case, this meant the compiled pages were using the (default) value in our non-existent web.config at compile time, not the one actually on the server at runtime.
Once we realised that, the solution was easy: simply add a –u parameter to the compiler flags which meant:
-u specifies that the Aspnet_compiler.exe should create a precompiled application that allows subsequent updates of contents such as .aspx pages.
If this option is omitted, the resulting application contains only compiled files and cannot be updated on the deployment server. You can update the application only by changing the source markup files and recompiling.

Here, you can get the same following 4 steps-

Step 1: Create your Customer Class

The first step is to create the customer class as shown below. So the customer class has 4 properties on customer id, first name, address and designation.

public class Customers

}

Step 2: Create your Web Service

The next step is to create the web service which exposes the customer class to UI. Here is a simple web service which has encapsulated customer collection. In the constructor, we are loading some dummy data into the list of customers as shown in the below code snippet:

   [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService]
public class Customer : System.Web.Services.WebService {

// Customer collection
List<Customers> listcust = new List<Customers>();
public Customer ()
{
//Load some dummy data in to customer collection.
listcust.Clear();

Customers cust = new Customers();
cust.CustomerID = 1;
cust.FirstName = “Dan”;
cust.Address = “Live in UK”;
cust.Designation = “Software Developer”;
listcust.Add(cust);

cust = new Customers();
cust.CustomerID = 2;
cust.FirstName = “Sheen”;
cust.Address = “Live in Austrailia”;
cust.Designation = “Web Designer”;
listcust.Add(cust);

cust = new Customers();
cust.CustomerID = 3;
cust.FirstName = “Koraine”;
cust.Address = “Live in London”;
cust.Designation = “Architect”;
listcust.Add(cust);
}

// This function exposes all customers to the end client’
[WebMethod]
public List<Customers> LoadCustomers()
{
return listcust;
}

// This function helps us to get customer object based in ID
[WebMethod]
public Customers LoadSingleCustomers(int _customerid)
{
return (Customers)listcust[_customerid-1];
}

Two functions have been exposed with the web service, one which gives out a list of customers and another which gives out individual customer data based on customer id.

Step 3: Reference your Web Service using the asp:servicereference

Using the ‘asp:ServiceReference’, the path to the ASMX file will be pointed as shown in the below code snippet. This will generate the JavaScript proxy which can be used to call the customer object.

<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">

    <Services>

        <asp:ServiceReference Path="Customer.asmx" />

    </Services>

</asp:ScriptManager>

Step 4: Call the Webservice and the JavaScript Code

Once you have defined the proxy, you can now call the ‘Customer’ proxy directly to make method calls.

function LoadAll()
{
Customer.LoadCustomers(LoadCustomerToSelectOption, ErrorHandler, TimeOutHandler);
}

When you call the JavaScript proxy object, then you need to provide three functions; the first function (‘LoadCustomerToSelectOption’) will be called when the web service finishes and returns data. The data will be returned in the fill variable which will then be looped and added to the customer combo box.

function LoadCustomerToSelectOption(Fill)
{
var select = document.getElementById(”cmbCustomers“);

for (var i = 0; i < Fill.length; i++)
{
var value = new Option(Fill[i].FirstName, Fill[i].CustomerID);
select.options.add(value);
}
}

There are two more functions which are attached; one which handles error and the other which handles time out.

function ErrorHandler(result)
{
var msg = result.get_exceptionType() + “\r\n“;
msg += result.get_message() + “\r\n“;
msg += result.get_stackTrace();
alert(msg);
}
function TimeOutHandler(result)
{
alert(”Timeout :” + result);
}

MySQL is a client and server implementation, which consists of a server daemon (mysqld) and many different client programs/libraries. It is a type of SQL database management featured in Thelix hosting plans. A database is an organized collection of information that a computer uses to select and display data.

Databases can help organize and enhance your site content. Sites with dynamic pages and/or shopping cart software often need an underlying database structure.

It is to be pronounced as “my ess cue el” (each letter separately) and not “my SEE kwill.” MySQL is an open source RDBMS that relies on SQL for processing the data in the database. MySQL provides APIs for the languages C, C++, Eiffel, Java, Perl, PHP and Python. In addition, OLE DB and ODBC providers exist for MySQL data connection in the Microsoft environment. A MySQL

NET Native Provider, which allows native MySQL to .NET access without the need for OLE DB, is also available. MySQL is most commonly used for Web applications and for embedded applications and has become a popular alternative to proprietary database systems because of its speed and reliability. MySQL can run on UNIX, Windows and Mac OS.

MySQL is a relational database management system, which means it stores data in separate tables rather than putting all the data in one big area. This adds flexibility, as well as speed.

The SQL part of MySQL stands for “Structured Query Language,” which is the most common language used to access databases. The MySQL database server is the most popular open source database in the world. It is extremely fast and easy to customize, due to its architecture.

Extensive reuse of code within the software, along with a minimalist approach to producing features with lots of functionality, gives MySQL unmatched speed, compactness, stability, and ease of deployment.

Their unique separation of the core server from the storage engine makes it possible to run with very strict control, or with ultra fast disk access, whichever is more appropriate for the situation.

Microsoft has released three new mice featuring its BlueTrack technology, indicating that the products featuring the innovation developed in-house are available at their lowest price ever. In fact, the Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, Wireless Mouse 2000 and Comfort Mouse 4500 all come with price tags of under $30, and are already up for grabs for customers.

When it launched the first BlueTrack products, the Redmond Company was confident enough in the technology it had developed that it encouraged users to start saying goodbye to their old laser mouse forever.

In response to people’s increasingly mobile lifestyles, BlueTrack Technology was created, letting them ditch their mouse pad and use their BlueTrack mouse virtually anywhere — from the granite kitchen counter and the wood table at the coffee shop to the armrest at the airport.

As the BlueTrack Technology debuted in September 2008, but finally it’s now available in eight Microsoft mice so consumers can choose the best design, color and price to fit their need, explained the software giant.

Users will be able to buy the Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 in two colors, Loch Ness Gray and Dragon Fruit Pink, while the Wireless Mouse 2000 will only be offered in a gray version. Microsoft underlined that while the Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 was smaller than the normal mouse average size; the Wireless Mouse 2000 is a bit bigger, giving end users the chance to choose the product that best suits their hands.

Mobility is, of course, the key aspect of both the Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, which comes with a Nano transceiver less than a centimeter long when connected to a USB port, but also for the Wireless Mouse 2000, that allows customers to stick a mini-transceiver into the bottom of the mouse.

The Comfort Mouse 4500 is the first wired mouse featuring BlueTrack Technology, making it a great choice for people who never want to deal with changing batteries. Like its wireless counterparts, the Comfort Mouse 4500 will track on virtually any surface2 and will be available in black as well as three fresh special-edition colors: Sea Blue, Poppy Red and Strawberry Pink.

All the new mice can already be purchased via Amazon.com. The Wireless Mouse 2000 and Comfort Mouse 4500 cost $29.95 and $24.95, and are scheduled to hit store shelves in March. The Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 will be just $29.95 and general availability is planned for April.

The problem is that it seems lots of folks don’t want users to automatically redirect to the Login.aspx page when they navigate to their site home page.

Also add a location section to your web.config file that explicitly allows anonymous users to access JUST the default.aspx page.

In this case the developer wanted to use an AJAX Editor Control inside a ModalPopup control.

This isn’t a problem but, the user needed to clicking the OK button to cause a post-back so that he could execute some server –side logic.

The ”Ok” Button is an ASP.NET control but adding a Click Event Handler for the button didn’t solve the problem because it didn’t get executed when the use Clicked on the “Ok” button.

Normally the ModalPopupExtender would be used like this.

    <ajaxToolkit:ModalPopupExtender ID="ModalPopupExtender1" runat="server"

                 TargetControlID="LinkButton1"

                 PopupControlID="Panel1"

                 BackgroundCssClass="modalBackground"

                 DropShadow="true"

     1.)         OkControlID="OkButton"

     2.)         OnOkScript="onOk()"

                 CancelControlID="CancelButton" />

Line number 1 tells the control to catch the click event for the Ok Button Control instance and line 2 specifies when CLIENT SIDE JavaScript code to execute when the control specifies in line 1 is clicked.

The post-back doesn’t happen (even if the ASP.NET Button control has a click event handler defined in code behind because the control doesn’t propagate it.)

So Just delete those two lines !

It turns out that they are optional and if you delete them the click event is not trapped and the code behind will execute as expected.

So just nake it look like this:

    <ajaxToolkit:ModalPopupExtender ID="ModalPopupExtender1" runat="server"

                 TargetControlID="LinkButton1"

                 PopupControlID="Panel1"

                 BackgroundCssClass="modalBackground"

                 DropShadow="true"

                 CancelControlID="CancelButton" />

A system BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a first program that is executed when you turn on your system. It ensures that the chips, ports, hard disks, video display card, and CPU (Central Processing Unit) are working together.

Upgradation in BIOS is performed by a firmware upgrade, which is called as ‘flashing‘. While BIOS upgradation is an easy process, the data saved in the hard drive might become inaccessible after the completion of the process. This happens primarily due to a bootable error message that appears at the time of booting the system. In such cases, if you need to access the hard drive data, then you can restore in from an updated backup. However, if no backup is backup is available, or the backup file is damaged, then you will need to use advanced third-party Data Recovery Software to recover the data.

To illustrate the above scenario, consider a practical case where you have a Windows 7 based computer system. You upgrade your BIOS on your system. However, when you try to boot your system after upgradataion, you receive a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

After the above error message appears, your system becomes unbootable and the data saved in the hard drive becomes inaccessible. Additionally, the same error message pops up every time you attempt to boot your system.

Cause:

The primary reason liable for the occurrence of a BSOD error message in such cases is that the Windows 7 operating system sees your system as a different machine.

Resolution:

To resolve the BSOD error message and access the hard drive data, you will need to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 operating system. While formatting the hard drive proves to be an adequate solution to overcome the error message, it also results in erasing the data saved in the hard drive. In such cases, the data erased after the formatting can be recovered by using advanced third-party Data Recovery Software.

A data recovery tools ensures complete recovery of all the files, irrespective of their reason of inaccessibility.

Windows Data Recovery is a user-friendly data recovery software that recovers data from formatted FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS, and NTFS5 file system volumes.

Introducing new small improvement that has been made in Visual Studio 2010 & .NET 4 to reduce the size of the ASP.NET application level web.config 3.0 and 3.5 web.config

As ASP.NET technology evolved, the application level Web.config had new things added to it. Since the earlier frameworks were using the same set of machine level configuration files, incremental feature that was added subsequent to the 2.0 release resulted in additional config settings included in the file.
.NET 4 web.config

With .NET 4, the web.config is tremendously reduced in size to improve the simplicity of ASP.NET

The config settings have been moved down to the machine config file. This includes registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers, modules and settings for the following:
•	ASP.NET AJAX
•	ASP.NET Dynamic Data
•	ASP.NET Routing
•	ASP.NET Chart Control

You can look at the trimmed down web.config by creating a .Net 4 ‘ASP.NET Empty Web Application’ in Visual Studio 2010.

Following is the web.config file for .NET 4 C# ‘ASP.NET Empty Web Application’:

The config file above has settings to tell ASP.NET to enable debugging by default for the application and provides the version of .NET framework to use.

CLR compiles the code written in .NET based languages to IL code or Intermediary Language or MSIL. MSIL is a set of instructions that can be compiled into native mahcine level code as a second and final step of compilation.

This MSIL code is JIT compiled i.e compiled on the need-to basis as and when called. The runtime provides three compilers – PreJIT, standard JIT and EconoJIT.

PreJIT compiles the entire code. EconoJIT compiles only those methods that are being called during runtime. These compiled methods are removed later when not required.

If your hard disk is clogged with massive photos and Microsoft Office documents, or if you’re looking for a better way to share those large files, consider FileMinimizer Suite 6.0. This simple-to-use software reduces photo sizes by approximately 90 percent with little noticeable degradation of on-screen quality, and typically it shrinks Office files by at least 25 percent, with no quality loss.

FileMinimizer does not create .zip archives containing your data; the files it creates retain their original format and are usable just as the originals are, so .jpg files remain .jpg files, .ppt files remain .ppt files, and so on. It handles Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files, as well as an assortment of image file formats (such as .jpg, .png, .gif, .tif, .bmp, and .emf).

The basic operation couldn’t be simpler. Choose the files that you want to compress and select the compression strength (low, standard, or strong), and FileMinimizer quickly goes about its work, taking only a few seconds to compress each individual file.

By default it keeps your original file and creates a new one, appending the text ‘(FILEminimizer)’ to the name. However, you can tell the program to overwrite your original file, and you can also have the utility apply a different name rather than appending the ‘(FILEminimizer)’ label.

Microsoft Corp is set to announce the new mobile phone software on Monday, as it looks to wrestle back market share from Apple Inc’s iPhone and Research in Motion Ltd’s BlackBerry, said the source close to the company.

The world’s largest software company, which makes operating systems for phones made by HTC Corp, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Motorola Inc and others, is hoping to regain momentum in the fast-growing sector after a lackluster update to its mobile software in October.

The overhaul of Microsoft’s phone technology comes as it hemorrhages market share in the burgeoning smartphone market, which many see as the key to the future of communication and media.

Last year, Microsoft took an 8.8 percent of the global smartphone operating system market, according to technology analysis firm Canalys, down from 13.9 percent the year before.

It trails Symbian, the system used on Nokia phones, which has 47.2 percent of the market, RIM’s BlackBerry with 20.8 percent and Apple’s iPhone with 15.1 percent.

Microsoft also faces competition from Google Inc’s new Android system, which already has a 4.7 percent share of the market.

Microsoft has taken another step to release its Visual Studio 2010 IDE and the accompanying .Net Framework 4 programming platform, offering a release candidate (RC) for the paired technologies on Monday.

The RC stage is considered the last step prior to a general release, with developers able to offer final feedback. The launching of Visual Studio Microsoft has scheduled the launch of Visual Studio 2010 and .Net Framework 4 for April 12, after having scrapped an initial March 22 launch date to work on performance issues found by beta testers.

The downloadable release candidate was offered to MSDN subscribers on Monday, while non-members can get it on Wednesday. Visual Studio 2010 features capabilities for developing applications for the Microsoft SharePoint collaboration platform, Windows 7, and the Windows Azure cloud platform; .Net Framework 4 offers features such as a reduction in size.

According to S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the Microsoft developer division, the goal of RC is to get more feedback from you and ensure it has addressed the performance issues in the product. RC has made significant performance improvements specifically as it relates to loading solutions, typing, building and debugging.

General Manager of the Microsoft developer division, Jason Zander said in a blog post that Microsoft has received a lot of feedback on the Beta 2 release of Visual Studio 2010 and .Net Framework 4.

In particular many of you pointed out areas of performance where we were not at parity with [Visual Studio 2008] and it was impacting your ability to adopt the product, said Zander. Some of those areas of feedback included general UI responsiveness (including painting, menus, remote desktop and VMs), editing (typing, scrolling, and Intellisense), designers (Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation in particular), improved memory usage, debugging (stepping, managed / native interop), build times, and solution/project load.

Zander said, in December Microsoft Technical Fellow Brian Harry and I made the hard call to extend the Beta 2 period to continue to drive improvements into the product. Zander also added that Microsoft also is working with third-party companies with Visual Studio add-ins, such as Resharper and CodeRush, to make sure the environment works well.

Developers can report feedback on the RC.

In other software development-related happenings at Microsoft, the company and NBC this week are reporting that the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in technology for rich Internet applications will again be used for online Olympics video coverage this month at NBCOlympics.com. Use of Silverlight for the 2010 Vancouver winter games follows the use of Silverlight for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Microsoft’s head of Windows in response to customer complaints said Monday, Window 7 does not ruin notebook batteries or issue premature warnings that the power is exhausted.

Within minutes, Windows 7 users who have experienced those problems disagreed, calling the explanation “hand washing” and noting that if the company’s conclusion was correct, then many affected users must be “under some sort of bizarre bad battery curse.”

Windows 7 is doing what it’s supposed to when it reports that a laptop battery needs to be replaced, one of the symptoms that users began reporting as long ago as June 2009, according to Stephen Sinofsky, the president of the Windows division.

In an entry to the Engineering Windows 7 blog, Sinofsky said Windows 7 is correctly warning batteries to the very best of the collective ecosystem knowledge that are in fact failing. “In every case we have been able to identify the battery being reported on was in fact in need of recommended replacement.”

Sinofsky also dismissed claims by a minority of users that Windows 7 had permanently crippled their notebooks’ batteries. Numerous users said that after upgrading to Windows 7, their batteries’ lifespan was dramatically shortened, and then completely curtailed. Returning to another operating system, even Linux, did not restore the battery’s performance.

Sinofsky said, Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this state. He also added that it was impossible for Windows 7 to harm the battery because of the way the operating system interacts with the hardware.

For Windows 7 or any other OS, there is no way to write, set or configure battery status information. All of the battery actions of charging and discharging are completely controlled by the battery hardware. Some reports erroneously claimed Windows was modifying this information, which is definitely not possible.

According to a battery maker, it was possible that Windows 7 was involved in some way. And a spokeswoman for Boston Power, a Westborough, the operating system usually receives information from system firmware which is responsible for monitoring battery capacity and operation. The firmware she referred to is the PC’s BIOS, which boots the computer and initializes the hardware components.

She also added that if there is an issue with the passing of information between the firmware and the operating system, it might cause improper warnings issued by the OS.

Microsoft may be close to add a new way for big business in order to buy Microsoft Office.

Union called new license, unde4r which Microsoft would charge enterprises the same for software whether it is hosted on-premises or in the cloud, according to a report in SDTimes earlier this week that quoted unnamed Microsoft channel partners who had been told of the program. No prices were listed.

The new license would help reduce complexity for large companies with workers with widely varying degrees of software usage. Heavy and regular users of a Microsoft app might require an on-premise server version, while light users can make do with a hosted version from Microsoft.

According to SDTimes, the union license would either apply to Microsoft Office run locally and hosted on the just-launched Windows Azure, or to Exchange and SharePoint, which Microsoft offers in software and hosted form. The latter is via Microsoft’s year-and-a-half-old Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS).

“Union” could be a new bundle that combines Office 2010 (on-premise) with Office Web Apps and, to store the data from the latter, SharePoint Online, according to Paul DeGroot, an analyst with the independent research firm, Directions on Microsoft.

It would allow Microsoft to maximize its revenue without driving customers toward cheap and free solutions such as Google Apps, Zoho and VMware’s recently acquired Zimbra e-mail app.

DeGroot wrote in an e-mail, Microsoft may ask the customer to pay for both ways, license plus subscription.

ASP.NET MVC 2 RC 2 provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 runtime.

ASP.NET MVC 2 is a framework for developing highly testable and maintainable Web applications by leveraging the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern. The framework encourages developers to maintain a clear separation of concerns among the responsibilities of the application – the UI logic using the view, user-input handling using the controller, and the domain logic using the model. ASP.NET MVC applications are easily testable using techniques such as test-driven development (TDD).

The installation package includes templates and tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP 1 to increase productivity when writing ASP.NET MVC applications. For example, the Add View dialog box takes advantage of customizable code generation (T4) templates to generate a view based on a model object. The default project template allows the developer to automatically hook up a unit-test project that is associated with the ASP.NET MVC application.

Because the ASP.NET MVC framework is built on ASP.NET 3.5 SP 1, developers can take advantage of existing ASP.NET features like authentication and authorization, profile settings, localization, and so on.

System Requirements

-Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista; Windows XP

.NET 3.5 SP1. Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Visual Web Developer 2008 SP1 are required to use certain parts of this feature.

Microsoft announced Thursday that it will no longer offer Linux or Unix versions of its enterprise search products after a wave of releases set to ship in the first half of this year.

Bjorn Olstad, CTO for Fast and a Microsoft distinguished engineer, wrote that Microsoft would continue offering and updating standalone versions of the company’s ESP platform for Linux and Unix after it bought Fast Search & Transfer in 2008. “Over the last two years, we’ve done just that”, he added.

But the products being released this year will be the last containing a search core compatible with Linux and UNIX, he said. There is logic behind Microsoft’s decision, according to Olstad.

Microsoft is trying to make the move easier on affected customers, Olstad added.

He stated that they will always interoperate with non-Windows systems on both the front- and back-end. Our search solutions will crawl and index content stored on Windows, Linux, and Unix systems, and our UI controls will work with UI frameworks running on any operating system.

In addition, it will support ESP 5.3, the search core for the products that will be released this year, for 10 years. Customers who decide to keep running the core on Unix or Linux can “add Windows-only innovations or cloud-based services by using a mixed-platform architecture,” he said.

Microsoft is also rolling out an “upgrade program” that will “help customers evaluate our hosted solutions and/or a Windows-based deployment.”

However, “there’s no immediate action required as a result of this announcement-and I expect that most of you will stay with your current deployments for some time,” Olstad added.

According to Jared Spataro, director of enterprise search at Microsoft, a significant number of customers are running Fast on Linux or UNIX. He declined to provide specific figures. Microsoft made the announcement now in order to give those users plenty of time to prepare, he said.

According to Gartner analyst Whit Andrews, Microsoft’s promises of continued interoperability offer some comfort. “This doesn’t mean Microsoft is casting out Linux users from their customer base. There will be people running Fast on Linux right out to the 10-year limit.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s announcement raises another question: whether it will continue offering a standalone search product for the long term, given its moves to align the Fast technology with its Share Point collaboration platform.

According to Spataro, there are no plans at this time to drop a standalone version, although Microsoft doesn’t tend to “project out any further than one product wave”. “When we look at any strategy, we really are looking at market demand. [Right now] we certainly hear there’s a need for a standalone version.”

Google may not be winning over the multitudes with its Nexus One “superphone,” but the search giant is gaining ground in the 21st century browser wars. Google’s Chrome browser grabbed market share in January from its key rivals, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox.

According to NetApps, Chrome finished January strong, with a 5.2 percent market share. Although a 0.6 percent gain may not immediately rattle the dominance of well-entrenched players like IE and Firefox, it does show a steady flow of users to the youngest player in the browser market.

Overall, Google has doubled its market share, and in January saw the second-largest gain since rolling out the browser in September 2008. Google has already surpassed Apple’s Safari in the browser wars, making it the third-most-used browser.

Google has exceeded its goals, hitting five percent well before its September 2010 deadline. Google aims to reach 10 percent by September 2011 but could reach that number this year if its growth rate holds steady.

Digging Deeper Into IE Usage

Weeks after the bad publicity around Internet Explorer 6 and its role in the China-based attacks on Google, Internet Explorer lost half a percentage point of market share in January, according to NetApps. That leaves Microsoft with 62.2 percent of the browser market, a record low.

Microsoft has steadily seen its share of the market eroded by the likes of Firefox, Opera and even Apple. Google seems to be putting another dent in the browser market leader. Microsoft has lost 10 percent of its market in the past 12 months while Google reached its 5.2 percent mark.

Looking a little deeper, IE6 saw a 0.9 decline in market share to 20.1 percent. IE7 also suffered in January, dipping a full percentage point to 14.6 percent. The good news for Microsoft is that IE8 is stemming the tide of losses, at least in part. Launched last March, IE8 rose 1.5 percent in January, ending the month with a 22.3 percent market share. That makes IE8 Microsoft’s most popular version.

Browser Round Up

The number-two browser, Firefox, also wasn’t immune to market declines in January. For the second month in a row, Firefox usage dipped. However, unlike Microsoft, Mozilla may not have as much reason to worry.

Although Firefox saw usage declines in December and January, there is no long-term trend. Firefox has only seen declines twice in about a two-year period. Overall, Firefox dipped 0.2 percent in January and still holds 24.4 percent of the browser market.

Turning to Safari, Apple gained a slight advantage, ending January with 4.5 percent market share, not enough to regain the number three spot but enough to outpace Opera, which fell to 2.4 percent.

Michael Gartenberg, a vice president at Interpret, doesn’t think the IE6 incident related to Chinese hackers has affected IE. Rather, he credits Google’s gains with the fact that the search giant regularly advertises Chrome on its home page.

“When you go to Google.com, if you are not using Chrome, you get offers to download and upgrade. When you’ve got the kind of clout Google has on its home page, it’s going to help drive adoption going forward,” Gartenberg said. “Of course, Chrome is a pretty good product, so that helps as well. It goes to show how fluid the tech market is today. It’s not easy for a small company to do a browser, but if you are a company the size of Google, you can make an impact on the industry.”

And on March 11, the drive will go on sale, which will cost ¥15,540 (US$172).

Its launch in Japan will mark the first time Microsoft has offered a 250GB drive add-on for the Xbox 360 as a stand-alone unit. The drive has been available overseas since late last year but only in a bundle with a new console.

According to a Microsoft spokesman, Kei Iwasaki, Microsoft has no current plans to put it on sale as a stand-alone unit outside of Japan.

The new drive more than doubles storage capacity from the 120GB drive available on the current Xbox 360 Elite console. The drive is used to store downloaded software, TV shows, movies and other content from Microsoft’s Xbox Live Marketplace online store.

Local storage on the console is becoming more important to Microsoft as it attempts to expand its online store and generate additional revenue from entertainment content.

Throughout 2009 the company continued to attract users to its Xbox Live service and ended the year with 29 million users, up 35 percent from the last day of 2008.

Recently, Rival Sony re-launched its PlayStation 3 console and includes a 120GB drive in each unit as it too works on expanding online sales of content such as movies and game downloads.

After the Department of Health (DoH) released an urgent bulletin of advising all NHS Trusts to use Internet Explorer 6 to upgrade their browser, the fallout from the Chinese hack on Google’s system continued.

According to Microsoft, a critical flaw in Internet Explorer had been the route by which Chinese hackers sought to infiltrate Google’s corporate systems, a flaw that it later admitted to knowing about for months.

And Microsoft has since issued an out-of-band patch for the problem, which can allow remote code execution on affected systems. But the company is recommending users to upgrade to IE8, which has security measures which will make the exploit code difficult to implement effectively.

And now the DoH Informatics Directorate has issued its own guidance for NHS Trusts, urging them to implement the fix as soon as possible. The bulletin also recommended that “organizations still using IE6 on the affected platforms upgrade to IE7″.

The directive added that the IE7 has been warranted to work correctly with NHS Spine applications such as CSA, and provides additional security features over IE6.

No further information has been provided bye the DoH, and is presumably not recommending an upgrade to the newest version of Microsoft’s browser, IE8, because of support issues with these key applications.

Google Apps senior product manager, Rajen Sheth, wrote in a blog post Friday that many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers, and they’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites.

The announcement comes more than two weeks after Google reported that its servers had been the target of attacks originating in China. Those attacks targeted a vulnerability in IE 6, for which Microsoft has since issued a fix.

According to Sheth, the support for IE6 in Google Docs and Google Sites will end March 1. At that point, IE6 users who try to access Docs or Sites may find that “key functionality” won’t work properly, he added.

Sheth suggested that customers upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox 3.0, Google Chrome 4.0 or Safari 3.0, or more recent versions of those browsers.

According to Stat Counter, IE6 has 18 percent market share among browsers.

HLSL pixel shaders allow you to implement high-quality, hardware rendered visual effects, which enables one to realize the valuable performance advantages of utilizing the computer’s GPU as opposed to the CPU. With the release of WPF 3.5 SP1 developers are now able to develop their own HLSL PS v2.0 compliant shader effects and implement them in WPF applications.

The process of building your own pixel shader is very systematic: simply code your HLSL effect; compile it into bytecode using fxc.exe, which comes with the Microsoft DirectX SDK; include the shader effect in the WPF project and you can add your custom effect! You can even animate your effects by passing values to the parameters of the of shader effects through a technique similar to dependency property definition. Before you get started your system should meet the following system requirements:

•	Windows Vista; Windows XP; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008;
•	Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (C# Express, Visual Basic Express, or Professional Edition)
•	Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1
•	DirectX Software Development Kit

To develop an effect, code the HLSL using an editor of your preference and save the code with a .fx extension. Next compile the .fx file into a .ps file using fxc.exe. This can be done via the windows command line. Navigate to the directory containing the .fx file and issue the following command:

-fxc /T ps_2_0 /E main /Fo<name of HLSL file>.ps <name of HLSL file>.fx//This line says to compile to the Pixel Shader 2.0 profile, and to look for the entry point named “main”.

Create a project containing all of the custom developed effects and include that project as part of any solution that will utilize them (make sure to remember to add the project as a reference of WPF project that will utilize them also). Set the build task of the .ps file to ‘Resource.’ Lastly, create a C# wrapper for your effect that sets up dependency properties for any parameters in the HLSL and creates a URI for the .ps file.

Now that you can add your own custom shader effects, you have a new dimension available in WPF to create unique applications and user experiences!

High Level Shading Language (HLSL) is a language developed by Microsoft that allows you to create C-like programmable shaders for the Direct3D pipeline. DirectX provides a compiler to compile the HLSL down into GPU assembly code. HLSL programs come in three forms: vertex shaders, geometry shaders, and pixel shaders. WPF 3.5 SP1 will offer developers the capability to implement custom HLSL pixel shaders. A pixel shader performs per-pixel processing such as texture blending, lighting model computation, and per-pixel normal and/or environmental mapping.

Limitations are placed upon HLSL programs based upon the pixel and/or vertex shader model version (i.e: Pixel shader V2.0 is instruction limited to 96 total instructions, 32 texture and 64 arithmetic instructions). For more information on HLSL, the MSDN Library entry serves as a good reference tool.
